How to Use Your Standing Desk Like a Pro

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Standing desks are becoming increasingly popular among workplaces and home offices. It’s mostly thanks to the benefits they provide, including an increase in focus and productivity, as well as physical benefits. They provide an effective solution to combat the problems that come from sitting in an office setting all day.

But, did you know you may not be using your standing desk to its full potential?

Thankfully, Autonomous has put together a few tips for using your standing desk like a pro, and getting the most benefits you can from this unique and innovative item.

So, how can you use your standing desk like a pro?

First, create intervals between sitting and standing. You don’t need to stand up all day long. Start slowly and work your way up to standing for longer periods of time. It’s also okay (and encouraged) to move while you’re at a standing desk. Tap your feet, take small steps, etc.

You’ll feel a lot better at the end of the day if you’re standing the right way. Make sure you’re standing straight and not slouched over, and don’t put all of your weight on one leg. If you’re sore at the end of the day, consider putting something soft beneath your feet while you’re standing at your desk.

It’s also important to take breaks! Most people are surprised to find out just how tiring standing for long periods of time can be. It’s okay to sit down and relax your feet throughout the day. Doing so will help you to stay motivated without getting burnt out.

If you have a standing desk or you’re thinking about getting one, keep these ideas in mind to keep yourself safe, pain-free, and to make the most of your desk each day.

A Total Guide to Upsizing Your Home

Hi lovelies,

You spend your youth sharing houses with friends or stuffing your entire life into a small apartment that feels on the verge of toppling over on top of itself at any time. Eventually, you save up enough money to move out and get a place that gives you room to breathe, and you can start living your life with a little more comfort.

And from there? You meet your partner; you start to build a family. First, with a goldfish, cat, or dog, and later, when you feel financially capable, children. But a growing family demands more space. The apartment or house you have right now may not be enough to accommodate an extra family member, and certainly not several more family members. So what can you do?

Upsizing is what most people think about. They consider themselves done with their starter home and are now ready to move onto a home they will live in for the rest of their lives. It will be the place they settle for good and where their children can grow. Before you start making moves towards upsizing, you need to ask yourself several questions to make sure it is the right decision.

Do You Really Need to Upsize?
The first and most important question you need to ask yourself before you upsize is whether or not it is necessary. It’s understandable. A lot of people will, eventually, get bored with their current scenery. Their home, whether owned or rented, does not spark the same passion that it did when they moved in.

And this is why many people consider upsizing as a viable option. They want to move and get a change of scenery. However, this is not always needed.

Still, if you are expecting a child and need more space for them to grow, or your career situation has changed recently, then this could be a sign that upsizing is right. Perhaps you need space to create a home office. You might want to give the new baby a room all to themselves. These are legitimate reasons for upsizing rather than just being bored with your home and needing a change of scenery, so be honest with yourself when asking if this is what you need.

To Extend or Buy?
Still, even if you recognize that upsizing is an appropriate choice, it might not be exactly what you need. While you can look for your perfect home, and if you can’t find the ideal home, there are other options available, including creating the house of your dreams, you can also consider extending your current property.

This comes with some issues, of course. You might need to upsize as soon as possible, and extensions can take a long time. Similarly, you can only arrange for an extension if you own the property. Considering that homeownership amongst millennials is not as booming as it has been in previous generations, this can be challenging.

However, if you are only flirting with the idea of upsizing and know you have a few months or even a year to decide whether a move is right for you, then an extension could be ideal. This will give you the chance to expand the space in your home, giving you somewhere to work while also repurposing another room for whatever reason.

What About Your Mortgage?
Your mortgage is always a tricky thing when considering moving out and then into a larger property. How much of your mortgage have you paid off already? Can you even afford to put down a deposit on a new property?

There are solutions to this, though. You can look at services that help you to calculate discount points on your mortgage, giving you a cheaper rate across the next 30 or 50 years, depending on what you can afford. This could be beneficial for your new house, especially when considering that it’s almost certain that the mortgage rate for a larger property will be higher if you decide to upsize.

If you determine that it is not affordable right now, you may need to exercise some patience. As moving house is a serious decision, you mustn't jump into anything too soon, as you want to be entirely sure that the home you choose is the right one for you and your family.

How Will It Impact Your Family?
Moving house does not only impact you. It can also have repercussions for your family. Your partner may not be able to move to the other side of the country because of work commitments. Likewise, if you have kids, it isn't ideal to tear them away from their friends. If you live near your parents or your partner’s parents, think about how your move will affect them, too.

The impact moving will have on your family is always something you need to think about. You can’t make these decisions on a whim, so it’s important to sit down and discuss the move with your family. You might find out that everyone is happy to move house, but they might have reservations about moving too far away.

Consider The Long Term
Too many people decide to move house while only considering the short-term implications of doing so. Moving to a bigger property will give you more space, but this is not the only thing you need to consider.

There are also factors such as easy transport links or how close the new house is to the best schools in the area. As this new property will be a family home, you’ll need to think about getting your kids into the best facilities.

You should also consider the space in the backyard, as your kids will need somewhere to play. Furthermore, what about mobile signal strength or wifi? If you plan to work from home for the foreseeable future, these are both an absolute must.

A Bigger Home Is More Expensive to Run
Finally, it should be obvious that a bigger home is more expensive to run. You will spend more on electricity and energy bills, you will need to spend longer keeping it tidy, as there are more rooms to clean. Furthermore, garden care and maintenance is something you can’t forget, especially if your neighbors expect you to keep up appearances.

Before moving, it’s also important to think about other maintenance costs. New homes should come ready to live in, but there are always a few teething problems you need to fix. The same goes for older properties. You may need to upgrade utilities or even replace water pipes, windows, and doors.

All of these can add up, and if you are not as financially stable as you hoped, it could cause some severe problems. Most people are shocked at the increased costs when moving into a larger property, so make sure you don't get caught up in the same web. Before you decide whether upsizing is the best choice for you, carefully consider your budget and overestimate potential costs. This should help you manage any problems early on, and give you a buffer for any later issues.

Moving Up
Upsizing gives you an exceptional chance to find the home you and your family will spend the rest of your lives in until your kids move out and start the cycle all over again. However, before you decide to upsize, you must consider the financial and social implications. There are always other options when looking for more space at home, and even if you decide that upsizing is not right for you at this moment, it doesn't mean that it won’t be later.

Three Houseplants To Make Your Home A Greener Place

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

With the festive period over, it’s time to retire that Christmas tree. But the feeling of losing such a central piece of greenery in your home will undoubtedly leave plant lovers wondering where to look for their next leafy living companion. Here are a few great ideas for house plants to keep your house looking green.

  • Snake plant. Don’t worry, even though the name sounds a little sinister, snake plants, in fact, don’t look anything like snakes. This plant is actually called by a whole host of other names, such as “Saint George’s Sword,” “Viper’s bowstring hemp,” and “Mother-in-law’s tongue.” Like a lot of cacti, a major advantage of this plant is how tough it is, and it can take a lot of neglect, which makes it great if you’ve got a busy schedule or you’re prone to forgetting to water your plants. Just beware, this plant will rot if you water it too much, and it is mildly toxic to cats and dogs and could give them gastrointestinal upset if they are prone to nibbling at your house plants. However, what has the potential to really make this plant a superstar is that it releases oxygen at night, making the air in your house fresher and helping you get a better night’s sleep.

  • Bonsai tree. The main advantage here is the aesthetic pleasure looking at a bonsai tree will give you. The main drawback is that growing one of these requires a lot of time and effort. Bonsai comes from Japan, dating back over a thousand years, and basically means the art of growing small trees in containers that look like miniature versions of large trees rather than common house plants. Most bonsai containers are quite shallow, and there are many techniques used to grow bonsai trees. This will require a large amount of dedication, and you will probably need to do a bit more research if you are interested in growing one of these plants. But the beauty of growing a bonsai tree is worth it if you put the effort in.

  • Peace lily. These plants enjoy shady spots in your house, so you can put them to work brightening up any gloomy corners. They have year-round flowers, making them enjoyable to look at at any time of year. Even though the peace lily is called a “lily,” it actually isn’t. Don’t worry, in a way that’s a good thing. True lilies are highly toxic to pets, whereas a peace lily will only cause a mild upset if ingested. Peace lilies were also discovered to naturally clean certain contaminating gasses in the air by the NASA Clean Air Study. It is only a very small amount, but it will make the air in your house a little fresher to breathe. It also doesn’t require much watering, so it won’t take up much of your time. The soil needs to be left damp and should only be watered again when it has dried out. Once a week should be enough.

Nine Solid Reasons To Replace Windows & Doors In Your Home

Candy Washington1 Comment

Hi lovelies,

There are certain upgrades that the home needs from time to time to keep it looking good, and one of the best ways to make changes is with an upgrade to the windows and the doors. The windows are the eyes to the home, and if you want your home to look beautiful, then making sure those eyes are bright and clean should be a priority for you. You would replace the roof if the shingle was broken, and you would replace the floorboards if they had a hole in them. So, why not replace broken windows or shredded paint on the doors?

If you want to know why you should replace the windows and doors, read on. We've put together nine great reasons the windows and doors should be your next priority when you want to make some home upgrades.

  • House Value. If you have plans to put your house on the market, you really need it to look good. There are many sites that show that replacing the windows can add significant value to your home by as much as 20%. Of course, this depends on the materials used, how many windows you replace and how you upgrade it. Most of the time, the value of the home changes year on year that you have your new windows. You can factor in new doors, too, from the garage to the front and interior doors to your home. If you spend a huge chunk of change upgrading the windows, you're investing in the house and will get a bigger return as a result. Many people look to the security of the windows and doors when they are choosing a house to buy and this is one area you don't want to skimp on. Not to mention, if people are dealing with condensation on windows at their current home, they'll be looking for homes with a more upgraded set. You can up the value and change the way that your house is seen when people come to view it as a result.

  • Saving Energy. A lot of the heat in your home escapes through the windows and if your window frames are broken, or you're using single pane windows, you will find that your energy bills go right through the roof. Saving energy isn't just about your home either, it's about being more responsible to the world around you. You need to look at how your brand new windows can benefit your home and speak to your window installer to learn how more secure windows will keep the heat in the house through the winter months. Keeping money down is just a pure bonus to saving heat in your home. You won't need to use the heating for as long or as often if you have brand new windows keeping it in!

  • It Just Looks Good. Peeling, weak doors don't look great for the house. No one wants to walk into a home and see the doors falling off the hinges, and doors that look battered will devalue the house. New doors on the outside and the inside of your home just simply look great. New windows look fresh, bright and will change the way you view your own house. The investment that you make here will upgrade each room, and the windows being brand new will make the house far more inviting and welcoming.

  • Comfort. No one wants to have condensation on windows and deal with the resulting mold. Your house is going to be far more comfortable when your windows and doors are replaced. If there are areas of your home that are uncomfortable to sit in because of the temperature, then new windows and doors can change the comfort of the house as much as the look. If you have new windows and doors, you're going to be able to better relax and use your home to its fullest extent.

  • It's Safer. Old windows with weak frames are unsafe. Anyone can pop out the frame and break into your home, and they can do the same when the doors of the house are reinforced and new. You can add new locks, have double-glazing and even add electronic codes to get in and out of the doors if you want to. Security and safety are a must in your home, and your windows and doors being intact will enhance that. You could even choose to buy laminated glass for yoru windows, making it harder for them to break!

  • Easy To Use. That rickety old door that keeps getting stuck but is too heavy to move alone? That's a fire hazard. When you replace the doors and the windows, you can choose those that are easier to use. Sliding locks and sliding doors are so easy to use and so many companies will give you a lifetime warranty to replace any damage that occurs if they get stuck or they stop working to their fullest ability.

  • Easy To Clean. Older windows and doors can often be hard to clean with paint flaking, but when you have new windows and doors installed in the home, you find that they are far easier to maintain and manage. They may not streak as much from the rain, and it may be easier to wipe down PVC doors compared to wooden ones!

  • It's Quieter. Most people choose to upgrade to windows that are double glazed, essentially drowning out the noise outside the home. Your home is going to become much quieter when you replace your windows. The noise of life beyond your windows won't seem so intrusive when you have them replaced. When you get your windows replaced, you will be surprised at how skinny your old window pane was!

  • Bye, Bye, Bugs! New windows have a much tighter seal than old windows, and if you've found yourself vacuuming up a line of dead flies by the window, then it's going to make you happy to know that this is less likely to happen with the new vacuum seal created by new windows.

Packing Tips To Take The Stress Out Of Moving

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Moving to a new home is exciting, but it’s also stressful and expensive, especially if you don’t know where to get started. There’s so much to do, including contacting your utility companies, cleaning your house from top to bottom, hiring a removals company, and packing all your things. How should you pack your home ready for the big move without getting stressed out?

Image - free for commercial use

Image - free for commercial use

Buy Packing Supplies
You’ll need a variety of boxes to safely pack all your things. The boxes must be sturdy enough to survive the move intact. Plastic boxes are a good idea to keep fragile or valuable items safe. You can buy cardboard boxes online, or gather some up for free from local grocery stores. You’ll need a mix of:

  • Small boxes

  • Medium boxes

  • Large boxes

  • Heavy-duty boxes

  • Wardrobe boxes (make your own with a tall box and a metal rail)

  • Mirror boxes/telescopic cardboard boxes for things like mirrors and artwork

As well as your boxes, you’ll need:

  • Packing tape

  • Bubble wrap

  • Styrofoam

  • Old newspapers

  • Stretch wrap

  • Markers

  • Plastic bags

  • Labels

If you can’t bear the thought of packing, you can hire a packing company to do it all for you.

Start Well In Advance
How long it will take you to pack everything up will depend on how many items you own. Start the packing process earlier than you think you need to, so it’s less stressful. You can pack a box a day, instead of pulling an all-nighter the night before to get it done.

Start With Rooms And Items You Use Less Often
If you have a loft, this is a good room to start in, then you can work your way through the rooms to the ground floor. Seasonal things that you don’t need now, like garden tools, coats, or Christmas decorations are the best things to pack things. Sorting through things like this that are already in boxes will make it easier to set aside the things that you want to keep and the ones that you would like to donate or sell.

Declutter And Donate
If you have things that you don’t want anymore, hold a garage sale to sell it all or give the things you don’t need to charity. You could also sell things on eBay or Facebook Marketplace to earn some money to help with the cost of moving. The less stuff you have, the fewer things you will have to pack, which can save you money when the time comes to book a moving company like North American Van Lines

Make An Inventory List
An inventory list will be helpful if you have a lot of things to pack. For example, you could just write ‘books’ on your moving boxes, but if you have a large collection that is usually spread around the house in organised shelves, this won’t help you much. A detailed inventory can be made on a spreadsheet which you can access on your phone, with print outs stuck to each box.

Happy New You - 2021 Is Coming!

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

There is something so special about the New Year. Most people don't realize just how special the turn of the year is, and then there are those who truly feel that magic as a new page turns off their story. It feels like stepping over a line, limbo-ing under a rope - even taking a breath of new air. A New Year often brings hope, comfort and the promise of wonderful things to come. Sure, 2020 didn't exactly turn out the way in which any of us hoped. No civilian could have foreseen a pandemic ruining their plans or locking down their Christmas. No one could have seen the airlines closing and even Disney World closing. However, here we are about to embark on a whole new year, a whole new chapter in the story of you, and you need a plan.

Well, no one *needs* resolutions, of course, but that doesn't mean that you can't have some. Sometimes, a plan is what you need to frame your year, but not necessarily what you follow to the letter. Having resolutions is almost always associated with giving things up but it doesn't have to be. Sure, you can click here to learn how you can stop drinking and make it your focus for 2021, but there's no pressure on you to do anything you don't want to do. So, how do you plan to spend your year? Do you think you can grab it with both hands? Let's dive into the resolutions that'll make for a happy new you.

  • Learn To Budget. Everyone thinks that they know how to budget, but many need to take some lessons in it. Checking out some of the many videos online to teach you how to budget your cash is going to make a big difference to the way that you spend your year. Even if most of it is spent in lockdown, you're going to be able to get on top of your spending and saving and it'll feel good to know that you're doing something about it. When you are stuck in lockdowns or unable to travel, save the cash and leave it in a savings account until you're able to spend it. 2021 could be the year for financial freedom; all because you chose to keep your money to one side.

  • Be Kind to Your Liver. We've just mentioned learning how to stop drinking, but it's not just about your budget and how much alcohol can cost you. Drinking less ties directly into your health. This is your year, and as you're turning over a new chapter, you can choose to leave excessive alcohol consumption behind and you can get yourself feeling your very best by the end of the year. Drinking less helps your liver, your skin, your mood - even your sleep. Your immune system will thank you for the effort that you make!

  • Quit Bad Habits. Are you smoking right now? We all know the health risks of regular smoking, and if you're not on top of your health in this way, you're going to end up feeling worse. Giving up such a bad habit is not easy - we won't pretend it is! However, a step in the right direction is going to be a big deal for you and you can save your money for every pack of cigarettes and have a cushion of cash by the end of the year, and much healthier lungs for it!

  • Switch Your Eating Habits. You do not need to go into the year with the view to lose weight, so we'll be clear about that going in. However, you could use this year to switch around your eating habits and start to eat well. You can enjoy better foods, healthier meals and you could even learn to cook. You don't have to go to culinary school to learn to be an excellent cook, either: you can do it just by logging into YouTube and following recipe videos here, too. You can eat less processed foods and more fruit and veggies this year, and make it a point to enjoy every single bite!

  • Hydrate Your Year. It's one of the hardest things to do, but keeping up with your daily water intake is a must. Water is necessary so you should make it a resolution to buy a water bottle to encourage yourself to keep drinking and keep your water intake up. Your water consumption will improve your digestion, the way your body detoxes, your skin - you need to remember to drink. Drinking 2-3 litres of water per day is going to go a long way to making you feel healthy and energized this year.

  • Start Exercising. You don't have to immediately join a gym, but you should find a workout routine that works for you and then stick to it no matter what. Habits are created after 21 days, so figure it out and stick to that habit. Not only will you improve the way that your body looks and feels, you're going to be able to indulge in physical activity and stimulate the brain as a result.

  • Vow To Sleep Better. You want a new year, new you, right? Well, you need to make time to sleep. Every single person out there needs a good amount of sleep per night to be able to be a whole, happy person. Prioritize your sleep this year. Get a new bed and splash out for pillows and blankets. It's a New Year, so why not have a new bed to settle into? Sleep changes the way that you feel, and you need to have a good, positive night of it if you want to have an energetic, happy year.

Lastly, just feel good. This is a new year but that doesn't mean that your personality has to change. Enhance your life and make sure that you come out of 2020 in one piece. When you do this, you can spend your time doing what you want to do rather than what you feel you have to do.

Home Comforts: How To Make Your Chill Time As Serene As Possible

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Busy, busy busy! That is the state that so many of us find ourselves in each and every day. However, there is more to life than being busy! Indeed, we are, at our core human beings, not human doings! What that means is it's essential to take some time to rest, relax and recharge, where we are not always focused on the outcome of our task or goal. Chill time if you will! The good news is you can ensure that your chill time is as serene, enjoyable, and as comfortable as possible by following the guidance in the post below.

Gather your resources
There is nothing worse than settling down to a good chill out session, only to find you don't have everything you need to hand. After all, no one wants to have to get up and move around if they get cold, need another pillow, or want a snack.

With that in mind, it's important to consider your potential needs for the entire session. If you think you will get cold, have a blanket to hand. If you think you will get hungry fix a snack before you sit or lie down, and the same goes for drinks. You can even use an insulated flask to keep your hot drinks warm for longer which is perfect for cocoa and Xmas movie relaxing sessions!

Get comfortable
Of course, snacks, drinks, and blankets are all well and good but they won't help to make your chillout session more enjoyable if you aren't dressed comfortably, to begin with.

Now, what you choose to wear when chilling out is entirely up to you, but as a rule, anything with an elasticated waistband is a smart option. That means clothes like yoga pants, PJs, in soft organic fabrics like cotton and bamboo are a smart choice.

Although, making sure your underwear is comfortable is essential as well. The good news is there you can now get soft bars that offer support without the underwriting that can be so uncomfortable.

You can even get knickers like the one from Tommy John that are designed to provide perfect comfort all day. They won't rub, chafe, or ride up, which makes them the ideal option for folks that are looking to do some hard chilling!

Peace and quiet
For true relaxation, you need to make some space in which to relax, both mentally and physically. That may mean doing a little tidy up so you can slob out in peace. Although don't let it turn into a deep cleaning session!

It can also be helpful to make some mental space by asking those you share your space with to leave for a while, or taking yourself off to a room where you can be alone for a bit. After all, the temptation is always to get into a conversation if there is another person around.

Of course, peace and quiet doesn't have to mean absolute silence. Indeed, there are plenty of other restful options such as listening to a relaxing playlist or doing a guided meditation. You may even like to put on a TV show that doesn't require much mentally or emotionally for your chillout pleasure?

However, it doesn't need to be so extravagant. You could stay local and book a hotel nearby. The chance of a change of scenery will be just as exciting.

Something personal
Let’s face it! Women love gifts that have the personal touch. It shows thought and effort have gone into choosing the gift. A personal gift could be something engraved with a special message. Perhaps a watch or a piece of jewelry. Or is could be something more specific to their interests. Whatever you decide I’m sure they will love it.

A spa afternoon
Finally, I don’t know many ladies who would turn down the opportunity to have a spa afternoon. The options of a massage, manicure, pedicure or even all of them. It can be the ultimate indigent gift. You could decide to book something yourself, or provide gift vouchers so that your special lady can book something in whenever it suits. A spa is a lovely way to unwind on a special occasion.

Let’s hope this has provided you with some inspiration on what to get that special lady in your life. Keeping it simple is the best advice anyone can give you.

Taking Care Of Your Parents As They Get Older

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

A sad but true fact is that one day, your parents are going to need more help with their day to day lives. As we get older, our bodies begin to deteriorate and certain abilities - even simple ones - such as climbing the stairs or standing to make a nutritious meal are almost impossible. As their child, it’s natural for you to want to help them as much as possible, and if you’re not sure where to start, we’ve put together this guide on taking care of your parents as they get older.

Bring in external help where possible
Taking care of your parents can be a huge responsibility, especially if you’ve got your own children to think about too. That, and working may mean that you don’t have as much time as you’d like to spend taking care of your parents - and that’s completely normal, so don’t worry about it! You can hire carers to visit your parents when you can’t to ensure they have enough food and drink, and to take care of anything else they might need such as bathing or going to the bathroom.

Take them for regular check ups
If one of your parents is rapidly deteriorating, it might not simply be down to old age. Sometimes, an underlying infection or disease could be causing the symptoms you’re seeing, and if caught in good time, could be a simple fix. Take your parents for regular check ups to see if there’s anything underlying that could be causing their difficulties. Cancer, for example, can limit movement, cause loss of appetite, and problems with bowels, and that’s just to name a few. Finding it sooner rather than later will allow your parents to gain access to cancer care and if caught early enough, still live a long life. Regular check ups at the Doctor’s will help keep an eye on this.

Don’t take away their independence
You might be feeling like you need to do everything for your parents, especially if they are struggling to do simple tasks. However, it’s important to have patience with your parents, because taking away their independence completely can be extremely dehumanising. This is especially important when it comes to making decisions like whether or not a care home might be the best option so they can get care around the clock. Respect your parent’s wishes and take the time to talk to them about what their options are.

Spend time with them
Finally, life is too short to worry about the ifs and whens, and even if your parents are ageing without any problems, you should spend as much time with them as possible! The fact is, nobody knows when their last day on earth will be, and you should cherish every moment you can spend it with those that you love.

Seeing your parents growing older can be distressing, so use these tips to give them the best care possible so that they can grow old with dignity around those who love them the most.

Natural Methods For Cleaning Carpets Without Harsh Chemicals

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Carpets are one of the biggest sources of air quality problems in the home. Over time, dust and dirt get trapped in the fibers and released when you walk around your home, which is why it’s so important to keep your carpets clean.

But you have to be careful about the products that you use because a lot of cleaning products are filled with harsh chemicals. That’s why everybody should switch to natural cleaning products instead, but a lot of people are concerned that they won’t be as effective. But there is no need to worry because there are plenty of natural remedies that will clean your carpet just as well. These are the best natural ways to keep your carpet free from dirt and dust.

Vacuum Regularly
Before you start looking at different cleaning remedies it’s worth remembering that the easiest way to keep your carpet clean is to vacuum regularly. The dirt can’t build up in the first place if you vacuum every couple of days, so stay on top of it. If you can’t be bothered to do that, why not get a robot vacuum so you don’t have to? It will automatically vacuum the house and switch itself off when it’s done and you can even get ones that will mop the hardwood floors too. You will save so much time and the air quality in your home will be far better because the dust is never allowed to settle in the carpet.

Steam Cleaning
Even if you vacuum regularly, your carpet will still get dirty and it needs to be properly cleaned from time to time. The best way to give it a good clean and remove all of the bacteria without using harsh chemicals is to use steam. Steam kills off bacteria, removes odors and gets rid of any stains on the carpet and you only need to use water. Steam cleaners are not that expensive and they can be used for chemical-free cleaning in so many areas of the home.

Homemade Cleaning Products
If you want a healthier, chemical-free home, making the switch to natural cleaning products is so important. There are some brilliant products that you can buy, which have been made with natural ingredients, but you can also make your own.

Baking soda is a very common ingredient in homemade cleaning products because it’s cheap and incredibly effective. If you sprinkle some baking soda and essential oils over the carpet, it will draw out any bad odors and stains from the carpet. After letting it sit for a while, spray it with a mixture of water and vinegar. It will fizz for a while, then you can clean it off with warm water and let the carpet dry. This method is just as effective as most of the chemical-filled carpet cleaners you can buy, and it’s much better for your health.

You don’t have to fill your home with harsh chemicals if you want to keep your carpets clean, just use these natural methods instead.

Searching For The Perfect Home? Create It Instead

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

If you are searching for the perfect home, then you should ask yourself why you aren’t simply creating it instead. It’s going to be virtually impossible to find a home that matches up to everything you want, but if you create it in the home you’re in right now, you’ve got a much better chance of getting it right. It’s for this reason that we think you should give up your search, and start your planning. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you need to do if you want to create the perfect home for you. Keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.

Know Your Vision
First, you need to know what it is that you want. You’re not going to be able to create the perfect home if you’re not sure what this actually means to you. As such, you need to have some kind of idea as to what you want the property to look like when you’re finished. It’s best if you write these down so that you’ve got a coherent list of the things that you’re looking for. This will come in handy when it comes to hiring people and giving them an idea of what you want. Sometimes it can be difficult to translate what you want to someone when you’re speaking out loud, and if this is an issue for you, then writing it down is certainly going to help.

If there are other people living in the house, then you need to ask them for their input. This way, everyone feels as though they have been involved in the process. For example, if you want something such as iron railings, then you might want to look at some ideas over at this website.

Hire The Right People
Another thing that you’re going to need to do is hire the right people. You don’t want just anyone working on your home, which is why you need to think carefully before you hire someone. Look at their reviews, talk to them about what they can and can’t do, etc. You’re going to need a number of different people working on this if you want to make it perfect, and you have to take the same time and care about hiring each one of them. If you don’t think that someone is the right fit for your project, then they probably aren’t, and you need to move on to finding someone who is.

Let’s Get Going
The final thing that you’re going to need to do is get started! As soon as you’ve got the right people in place to complete the work, things can go ahead. Make sure that you’re checking everything throughout the process to end up with exactly what you want. Don’t settle for anything less than your dream home if you’re doing it this way because you’ve got the chance to create it.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you need to do if you want to create your perfect home. You are far more likely to get everything that you want if you do this, rather than trying to find a ready made perfect home. Good luck!

Create The Beautiful Low Maintenance Home You Deserve

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Living in a beautiful home is about more than just aesthetics. It's about occupying space that nourishes us emotionally and mentally as well as physically. It's about having somewhere we can use as a retreat from the world, a place where we can rest and recharge and fill up our empty metaphorical cups. Of course, if we are spending all of our time tending to, cleaning and taking care of such a space, we will have little energy or time left to enjoy it. The good news is that we can create a home that is at once beautiful, and easy to take care of. Keep reading to find out how.

Go minimal
It's obvious really, but if you want a home that is easy to take care of, keeping the interior as simple as possible is the way to go. After all, clutter is not only harsh on the eyes but can sap your time as well—both when it comes to it clean and organized.

With that in mind, minimalism is a beautiful trend to adopt because it allows for the things you need. Still, it also encourages you to consider this very carefully, while ridding your life and your home environment of unnecessary things.

Of course, for many of us getting our living space to a place where they can be considered genuinely minimal is a bit of challenge. Fortunately, you don't have to get there overnight. Instead, you can use some of the popular declutter techniques such as Kon Marie to gradually reduce the number of items. Indeed, the process of decluttering can be a beneficial form of self-care, because clutter is often a physical manifestation of procrastination, living in the past and decisions that have been left unmade. Therefore by attending to these decisions, you can reap the emotional benefits and the extra space decluttering will create.

However, it is essential to note that decluttering is only one aspect of keeping your low maintenance and simple. After all, clutter does tend to collect if we do not monitor it all of the time. With that in mind, it is also a smart idea to institute a 'one in - one out' policy when it comes to new items. That means if you buy or are given something new for your home, you need to get rid of something old, therefore stopping clutter building up and keeping your home as low maintenance as possible.

Keep your decor simple
Another way that you can make your home low-maintenance is to opt for simple decor. Yes, that does mean avoiding things like large Rococo mirrors and things like coving and moulding on the walls.

You can even apply this principle to the bedding you choose. After all, washing, drying and ironing comforters and sheets, especially for king size beds, can be a time-intensive job. With that in mind, why not choose gorgeous, comfortable linen bedding that doesn't have to be pressed, and it is much better for your body and skin because it is a natural fabric that breathes?

Keeping things simple may not sound like a big deal, but, it truly is because the more ornate the items in your home, the more difficult and time consuming they are to clean and maintain. With that in mind, choosing the simplest version with the cleanest lines is an excellent way to ensure your home stays as low maintenance as possible.

Install low maintenance essentials
While most of the low maintenance tips you will find here are about your home's decor and interior, it is essential also to apply this philosophy to your entire home. Therefore, if you can find a lower maintenance option for your property, you should grab it with both hands!

The good news is that manufacturers and retailers are getting wise to the fact that we want these types of options. Therefore it's now possible to get everything from plants to lawn grass, to septic tanks that require only minimal maintenance. Something that means you can spend more time enjoying your home, rather than taking care of it.

Opt for stain-resistant materials
One of the best ways to make sure your home is as low maintenance as possible is choosing materials, particularly fabrics, resistant to spill and stains. Leather is perfect for this, as stains can be easily wiped away very quickly.

Of course, not everyone will want real leather in their home, and if you are following a vegan lifestyle, you can get some excellent leather replicas now. Another great thing about leather and leather-like materials is that they age well. This means their not just low maintenance in terms of effort but will last for a lot longer and save you money

No problem if leather isn't your thing, as there are other options to consider as well. Indeed, you can now get all sorts of specialized fabrics that are resistant to training, or you can use products like Scotchgard to treat fabrics you already have.

Look out for the new types of carpet too, that are very thick piles but can also be very easily spot washed, even with bleach while doing no damage to them at all!

Opt for easy care floors
While we are on the subject of flooring, there is much that can be done to keep things low maintenance in this area. In particular, wooden floors are a good choice here, because you can give them a quick brush and they will look great even without having to use a vacuum.

However, it is also vital that you look out for flooring that doesn't give dirt and dust the chance to settle and collect. That means anything that has no significant gaps such as larger tiles, or vinyl flooring.

Finally, before you make your flooring choices, check what needs to be done to them for maintenance and cleaning. After all, some floors can look gorgeous but need all sorts of work like buffing and polishing to keep them looking their best. Therefore they are not low maintenance at all!

Craft Your Dream Home In 3 Simple Steps

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

If you are tempted to move onto pastures new and begin a new chapter in your life, you might be hunting for your dream home. You might need more space, you might crave more outdoor space, and you might want to live in a totally different location. However, funding this dream can be a challenge. Many people have lofty ambitions and desires for their property. But, their financial status may not equate to these wants. If this sounds like your situation, don’t assume that your dream home is out of reach and that you have to make do.

Ensure that you think outside the box and consider the wonderful world of the fixer upper. You can find that your dream home is in reach if you buy it as an incomplete shell. Many people choose to venture to the auction and check out the homes, houses and fixer uppers on offer. If you are eager to hunt for your dream home but don’t have the readies to buy a complete showhome example, check out this guide to craft your dream home in three simple steps.

1. Choose Where You Want To Buy
Before you can enter the house hunting sphere, you need to narrow down where you want your dream home to be. You may simply want to stay in your current location but upgrade your property. However, more often than not, people seek a change of lifestyle to go along with their new home. Consider the sorts of places that you would love to live and try to work out if this would fit in practically with your needs.

If you have a small brood who are already settled in school, would you be willing to move them for the sake of your dream pad? You may think that you can cope with the hour commute to drop them off at the school gates for the sake of a swanky pad, but what about their friends and socializing? At the same time, you need to consider how the location of your new home fits in with your job and family commitments. If you want to be close to extended family, your dream home three hours away on the coast might not be suitable. If your job requires you to complete a laborious commute every day, you don’t want to be traveling for more than an hour each way otherwise you will become tired and your new lifestyle will grate on you after a while.

Consider whether you want to go suburban, inner city or totally rural. The thought of living out in the sticks sounds exciting but it can be a huge disappointment for those individuals who crave culture, people, and community. You may want to test the waters first and rent in the location where you see yourself living. This might be a good option for those people who are indecisive and struggle to pin down their dream location.

2. Fixer Upper
If your finances are a little stretched and you are short to buy your dream home in your dream location, the property auction beckons. Hot foot it to your local auction and get a feel for the action. Observe how the auctioneer takes bids and monitor the sorts of prices that properties go for. Pick up an auction catalogue and try and work out the maximum bid that you would make should you be bidding on a pad.

You may find that you spot a potential home online that is going to auction. You need to view it and read the legal pack. Is it in your ideal location? Could you carry out a scheme of works after the initial purchase price without going into the red? You can always change a property but you can never change the location so it pays to try and purchase th worst house on the best street. This means that you can pick up a real bargain. Ensure that the legal pack for the property doesn’t have strange covenants like being unable to change a kitchen and check that the home isn’t on a flood plain.

When you are ready, you can venture to the auction with a maximum bid in mind. This should be affordable to you, you should have your home loan in place, and you should have factored in your renovation costs. Don’t let your heart rule your head and go above your maximum bid. There will be other homes out there.

3. Renovations
When you have the keys in your hand for your new pad, you can consider the renovations that you want to carry out. Firstly, you need to make sure the property is structurally sound. This means checking the roof for slipped tiles, checking window seals, and ensuring all brickwork pointing is complete.

When it comes to creating an energy efficient and watertight home, you will need to adapt your exterior. Consider swapping the old school sash and single glazed windows for more energy efficient double glazing. Renewal by Andersen window replacement will measure up your specific glazing needs and fit a fully customized set of windows for your home. This means that your pad will be less costly on heating bills and will prevent draughts and leaks entering your humble abode.

When your home has its utilities connected and you are ready to get a bit more creative, you can begin to choose your kitchen, bathroom and configuration of your home. Having a shell that you can put your own stamp on, you can create the living spaces that are fit for your lifestyle. If you want a large kitchen diner, you can knock down a wall to create more open plan living. You might choose to extend after obtaining planning permission. And you might want to change the walkthrough of your pad.

When it comes to decor, you can think more with your heart. If this is your dream home and you aren’t planning on selling up, you can go for the deep damson feature wall and you can opt for the high gloss red kitchen. Go with what you love and don’t follow the interior design trends on the covers of magazines.

Follow this simple guide and you can create your dream home by thinking outside the box and harnessing your finances in the best possible way.

3 Main Challenges When Starting a Family & How to Prepare For Them

Candy WashingtonComment
Screenshot 2020-11-30 085020.png

Hi lovelies,

Deciding to start a family is always going to be a huge step. Both exciting and painfully overwhelming, it’s an experience like no other. One of the best things you and your partner can do is to plan ahead and expect the unexpected.

Here are some of the main challenges you are likely to face when starting a family as well as the top solutions.

1. Fertility
Fertility issues are incredibly common and affect roughly 7% of women and 10% of men. Due to its prevalence, there are several options out there which can increase your chances of getting pregnant.

If you have been trying to get pregnant for over a year and not seen any luck, it might be time to get some tests to see if there are any fertility issues. Once you know this for sure, you can begin to assess the different options.

One of the most popular fertility treatments, due to its high success rate, is in-vitro fertilisation. Your first steps will include selecting a fertility clinic such as advancedfertility.com, as success rates can vary depending on where you go.

Other fertility treatments include surgeries, artificial insemination and assisted contraception.

Selecting a treatment is a personal journey depending on your particular issues as well as your needs.

2. Finances.
One of the greatest concerns everyone is faced with when starting a family is: how am I going to afford this?

There is no perfect number to define when you’re ready to start a family. It all comes down to what’s affordable and realistic for you. What you can do is consistently put money aside, where possible, and start saving gradually over time.

Other worries might include: when can I go back to work? Should I get a part-time job to tide me over? How will we afford childcare?

In terms of returning to work, this is something you will decide when the time comes. The good part is - it’s all within your control. If you think you might want to stay at home with your baby for longer, make paying off any outstanding debts a priority.

You could also think of some creative ways to earn money on a part-time basis while not returning to full-time employment, such as starting a blog, selling artwork or anything which fits around your busy schedule as a full-time parent. The nature of work is becoming ever-more flexible, so use this to your advantage.

The final and perhaps most crucial point is to know your rights. This doesn’t just mean your maternity package, but child benefits and grants you could be entitled to. There are several benefits in place for unemployed people or those on a low income, so rest assured that there are always options in place for you to fall back on.

3. The fear.
Is this really happening? That moment where it really hits you; whether that’s from the moment you and partner decide to start trying, or the moment you get that positive pregnancy test, it’s terrifying.

Make time for yourself and continue doing the things you love. When planning to start a family, it, understandably, becomes the central focus of your life. To stay on top of your mental health and be your most happy, confident self, make sure you keep concentrating on you as well.

Work Schedules That Support a Flexible Working Lifestyle

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Today’s employees have become ever demanding for a flexible working plan that allows them to "work and play" at the same time in a day or week. The "smart work style" has been on the rise since the advent of technology. Whether working from home to working in pairs, a flexible working lifestyle offers most employees the needed space for work productivity.

Work schedules of employees range from full-time to part-time and much more. In all of these schedules, employees are expected to put up work that results in productivity and not necessarily to work hard.

In this post, you will find work schedules that aid a flexible working lifestyle for employees. Employers of labor can adopt any of these work schedules to aid productivity at the workplace.

Alternative Shifts
Having employees work long hours in the day has been shown to reduce work productivity and a positive attitude to work on several occasions.

Shift work is a technique that functions in organizations that carry on business seven days a week and 24 hours a day. In this work style, an employee works a few times a day and a few days in the week, giving him time to attend to other issues. For instance, James works from 8 am to 8 pm every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday; on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, Williams takes over James's shift from 8 pm to 8 am.

Shift work allows employees to rest a good part of the week and is a suitable work schedule that provides a flexible lifestyle.

Job Sharing
Job sharing has been in vogue as far back as creation. Teamwork is the ideal picture every employer paints for their clients and customers. There has been an increased intake of persons who work effectively with teams than those who don’t. Also, over a billion dollars have been invested over the years by employers and employees as a whole to provide proper training for teamwork and leadership.

Job sharing has its ups and downs for employees. An advantage is job sharing offers workers a flexible lifestyle—the idea of having a partner who could work on a job while you deal with the other. This way, the job will be completed quickly. The disadvantage is job sharing might lead to a clash of interests when trying to get a job done; this, in turn, can slow work productivity in the long and short run.

Working from Home
Perhaps the newest work schedule option and the most flexible. Working from home involves providing value to the company while at the comfort of your home.

Research has shown that over 80% of employees prefer the work from home option to any other work schedule.

Working from home offers the best flexibility; you can pick up your child from school, make dinner, watch late-night movies and still take that call from your boss, seal that deal with the client, get the goods delivered to the customer, and so much more.

However, working from home has its challenges, one of which is the lack of work resources to perform effectively. This challenge is mostly associated with professionals.

Part-Time Job
Part-time jobs also offer a flexible working schedule for employees. The part-time job is similar to the alternative shift—some have even mistaken one for the other.

There are different definitions or specifications for part-time jobs, with business experts calculating various types of work hours for the job. But a generally accepted definition by the business world is a job where a worker is made to work less than 30 hours a week. This differentiates the part-time job from the alternative shift job.

This work schedule option is the most adopted by a majority of employers today.

Temporary employee
The temporary employee is hired to help the employer fill vacant roles without hiring a full-time employee.

Although the employee doesn't work as a full staff, they are a part of the organization. Since the temporary employee isn't a permanent staff, this working schedule gives employees the flexibility to attend to other issues.

The temporary employee is similar to the part-time employee and the alternative shift employee. One of the differences is; while in the case of the part-time, the temporary employee has work times exceeding 30 minutes, in the case of alternative shift, the temporary employee doesn’t have another worker who replaces the employee in a shift.

In Summary
Work schedules with more flexibility have been the vogue since the start of the 21st century. The benefits are evident in the output derived from employees when one of these flexible work styles is adopted.

Staying Healthy Behind The Wheel - What You Should Know

Candy Washington1 Comment

Hi lovelies,

Staying healthy behind the wheel is something everybody with a driver’s license should think about, whether they drive a lot or not. Of course, the more you drive, the more important this becomes! It’s all too easy to let your health fall by the wayside when you find yourself on the road constantly, but taking a few precautions can make a huge difference to your health in the long run. Read on for what you should know:

Make Sure Your Driving Position is Right For You
Your driving position could potentially have a long-term effect on your health, especially if it’s incorrect and uncomfortable. Make sure you alter your driving position and find the perfect one for you so you don’t end up with any long term back issues. You shouldn’t have any space between your back and the seat, especially your lower back, and you should be able to rest your head and drive comfortably.

Check Your Route and Other Elements of The Drive Beforehand
Don’t just drive out and forget to check your route. You won’t know if there are any diversions or blockages otherwise, and you’ll end up frustrated. Make sure you check the weather, too, as this could impact how long it takes you to arrive at your destination.

Don't Touch Your Phone
Once you are in the car, don’t touch your phone! If you use it as a sat nav, set it up for that so you don’t need to touch it at all before you set off. Using your phone to listen to music is fine, but you shouldn’t be taking your eyes off the road to look at notifications or message anybody - even in traffic. Not only is it dangerous, you could get in big trouble. If you don’t know whether you can resist the temptation, it might be a good idea to put your phone in your glovebox.

Know What To Do In The Event of an Accident
Having an idea of what to do and who to call in the event of an accident is super important. Make sure you have numbers noted down and documents in an accessible folder, even if it’s on your phone. Do you have breakdown cover, or will you call your insurance? Could a family member help you? Remember, before you get a rental car you should open a claim first. If you were involved in an accident this often means calling the correct authorities, taking pictures of the scene, and making sure you take other precautions.

Try To Eat Nutritious Food
Make sure you try to eat nutritious food on the road. This could mean preparing some food and keeping it in a cooler bag, or simply knowing how to read nutritional labels so you can buy the best thing from a rest stop. Stay hydrated, too, as this will give you energy.

Wear Sunscreen
Sun can damage skin even through car windows - and often mostly on the one side of your face by the window! Apply sunscreen liberally before setting out on any journey, even if the sun isn't out.

8 Questions to Ask Yourself When You’re Thinking of Starting a Family

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Deciding to start a family is a major step in your life and not one you’ll want to take lightly. Choosing to have children is a life-long commitment, so it’s vital to ensure you’re in the right place – physically, emotionally, and practically.

While family members, friends, and society as a whole may be encouraging you to have children, deciding to start a family is something that only you and your partner have a say in. With this in mind, take a look at the eight questions to ask yourself when you’re thinking of starting a family:

1. Is Your Relationship Strong?

If you’re choosing to have children with your partner, you’ll want to ensure your relationship is ready for the extra pressure it will be under. Sometimes, people assume that having a baby will repair a relationship, but this is rarely the case. Caring for a newborn is tough and puts anyone under strain, which means relationship problems are likely to be amplified when you become parents.

However, if you connect well with one another, understand each other’s needs, can imagine a long-term future with them, and firmly believe your partner will be a good parent, there’s a good chance your relationship will be strong enough to weather the storm.

2. How Will You Have Children?

Many couples choose to conceive naturally, but this isn’t the only way to have a baby. Artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and adoption are just some of the other options out there. If either you or your partner has health issues that will make it difficult to conceive naturally, for example, you may choose to have fertility treatment. Alternatively, if you want to love and raise a child who is in need of a loving home environment, adoption might be your preferred choice.

3. Why Now?

If you’re suddenly feeling the urge to have children, it’s important to understand your motivations. Do you want a baby because you feel practically and emotionally ready or are other factors affecting your decision? Some women feel rushed into having children because they’re getting older, for example, but the egg freezing process can help to give you more time to start a family. By identifying and understanding why you want to start a family, you can begin to determine whether you feel ready to become a parent.

4. What Will Happen to Your Career?

If you’re currently working, you may wish to take an extended break when you have a child. Maternity and paternity benefits can vary from company to company, state to state, and country to country so it’s important to identify exactly what you’re entitled to. Furthermore, you’ll want to consider whether you’re willing to forego the potential promotion opportunities which may come your way in the next 12-18 months.

Taking a break at the right time can make it easier to return to work when the time comes if you choose to. This can have a major impact on your family’s future, so choosing the right time to take a career break is a critical point to take into consideration.

5. Are You Financially Ready?

Having children is expensive, no matter how old they get. If your income isn’t secure, you may be worried about how you’ll fund essential costs when a baby comes along. Similarly, if you don’t currently have any savings in the bank, you might be worried about how you’ll finance larger purchases, like nursery furniture, medical treatment, or childcare fees.

Do a financial audit to establish exactly where you are and then calculate how much you’re likely to spend in the first two or three years of a child’s life. By doing so, you can establish whether you’re financially ready to have a baby and, if not, what you need to do to get there. Similarly, look to your financial future to determine how you can increase your income or savings to ensure you’ll have the funds you need to raise your family.

6. Do You Want to Raise a Child in Your Current Location?

If you’re happy in your current location and it’s a good place to raise a child, you may be content to stay there for the foreseeable future. However, if you don’t have easy access to good schools or there aren’t many job opportunities, you may need to think again.

Moving to a new area when you’re heavily pregnant or when you have a baby can be difficult, both practically and financially, so you may want to make this transition in advance. If you know you want to have children in the near future, for example, you may decide to move to a new location before getting pregnant.

7. Are You Emotionally Ready?

Knowing whether you’re emotionally ready to have a baby can require a lot of self-analysis and soul searching. You may want to resolve any on-going issues in your life before you take on the challenge of parenthood, for example. During this process, be kind to yourself and take all the time you need. For some people, talking to someone, like a close friend, therapist, or counselor, can help you to process your thoughts and deal with them in a healthy and constructive way.

8. What Does the Future Look Like?

You can’t predict the future but imagining your life in two, five- or 10-years’ time can help you to get an idea of what you want your future to look like. If parenthood is a firm fixture in your future, then it might be a sign that you’re ready to have a baby now. Alternatively, you may realize that you want to experience other adventures or achieve other things before you commit to being a parent.

Deciding to Start a Family

No one can be fully prepared for what parenthood holds until the time comes but you can get an idea of whether you’re ready to be a parent but assessing the different ways a child will impact your day-to-day life. With introspection, practical considerations, and honesty, you and your partner can decide whether you’re truly ready to start a family.

Hi lovelies,

With winter approaching, many homeowners are worried stiff about the structural integrity of their roofs, floors, or walls. Going into the cold winter period with a leaking roof or malfunctioning heating system is a discomforting experience. Renovations, repairs, or upgrades are not reserved for the freezing winter and the blistering heat of the summer.

However, home maintenance is financially tasking and time-consuming. The following essential home maintenance tips will help save money while also leaving your home structurally sound and ready for the season:

Access your home maintenance needs

No one knows the nooks and crannies of your house like you do. Stroll around the home and self-inspect the house. Note any areas that need repairs. You cannot budget for a slab leak repair without first identifying the severity of the problem. Check the heating, ventilation, and cooling system, insulation, and even the foundation. Cost-effective home maintenance should also factor in the exteriors. Therefore, check if the lighting, drainage, and other installations are working. Self-inspection is a great way to save money and ensure your repairs and renovations are thorough.

Develop a checklist and prioritize
Before picking up the phone to call a professional or opting for DIY repairs and maintenance, make sure you have a list. A to-do-list will ensure that you track the progress. You may end up paying thousands of dollars in significant home repairs because you missed a leaking roof or malfunctioning HVAC system. As you work on the checklist, consider listing the repairs based on priorities and available funds.

Get the help of a professional
Hiring a certified and experienced professional may seem like a counterproductive measure for a homeowner seeking to save money on repairs and maintenance. However, quality professionals guarantee high-quality services that last for years. A shoddy work translates into more money washed down the drain due to constant yet avoidable repairs and even legal troubles.

As a bonus, you won’t have to worry about licenses, safety, or running into trouble with the local municipal authorities. Licensed and professional contractors always cover any issues, including insurance. Therefore, ask for those referrals from close friends and colleagues if you have any home maintenance job.

Consider hiring yourself
One of the best ways to save money on home maintenance is performing the repairs yourself. Some of the repairs at home require fewer skills and experience. You can tap into your knowledge and skill base and save those dollars for an extra holiday gift for your loved ones. Instead of hiring a handyman, ask your loved ones to chip in and repair those broken windows. The feeling of repairing your home with your loved ones as your workmates is deeply satisfying.

Improve your toolbox
Whether you plan on hiring a professional or repairing the HVAC unit yourself, you need a well-equipped toolbox. You can’t remove sediments from the water heater without a garden hose pipe.

The value and longevity of your home depend on care and maintenance.Get your home ready to sell, lease, or rent by repairing or upgrading the heating system or gutters by yourself or hiring a qualified professional.

How to Travel Safely This Holiday Season

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

The holidays are about to be in full swing. Unfortunately, this year will look different for so many people in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, 115 million Americans traveled somewhere during the holiday season. This year, however, that number will undoubtedly drop dramatically.

Many people will be staying home for the holidays in order to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.

However, others don’t have much of a choice but to do at least some traveling. Or, maybe you absolutely need to head home to see your family. If you do decide to do any traveling, there are a few safety precautions you should put in place to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy and protected.

Consider Road-Tripping
Instead of choosing to fly anywhere for the holidays, a safer option might be to take a road trip. Road trips are a great way to connect with your immediate family and reduce your risk of exposure because you’ll be around fewer people.

We’ve already talked before about how great traveling in an RV can be, so whether you rent out a rig or travel by car, it’s a fantastic opportunity to make new memories.

If you do decide to go on a road trip to visit loved ones, be aware of any pit stops you make to get something to eat, go to the restroom, or get gas. Always wear a mask when you’re around others, wash your hands frequently, and social distance as much as possible.

It’s also important to make sure you’re keeping yourself healthy while you’re on the road. That includes getting enough rest so you’re not tired behind the wheel. Being alert will help you to be aware of any traffic issues, and can help you to avoid an accident. If you aren’t alert enough to drive, you might end up having to retain a skilled personal injury attorney - not exactly the way you want to spend your holidays!

Educate Yourself as Much as Possible
No matter where you’re traveling, make sure to stay up-to-date on any safety rules and regulations they might have in place. Certain locations might have more restrictions than others. By educating yourself ahead of time, you’ll know exactly what to expect and you won’t be overly-stressed when you have to follow those restrictions.

Don’t Go If You’re Feeling Sick
If you’re feeling sick at all before your travels, it’s probably best to postpone or cancel your trip. Even if you think you just have something as simple and harmless as a cold, you could be putting others at risk if they get sick, too. That’s especially true for family members with weakened immune systems.

If you’re worried about passing on any type of illness, make a point to get tested for COVID before you go anywhere. The test is easy as usually only takes a few days to receive your results. If you test negative, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your family members won’t contract anything from you.

Keep a Positive Attitude
Unfortunately, the mental health impact of this pandemic is a very real thing. While it’s too soon to tell just how strong that impact will be, studies have already shown increases in cases of anxiety and depression. Loneliness is a huge problem, as well, and isolation can be incredibly dangerous when it comes to your overall mental health and wellbeing.

The holidays can often be stressful enough. But, this year feels different for so many reasons. One of the best things you can do if you’re traveling is to keep a positive attitude and try not to let that stress overwhelm you.

In order to do that, it’s important to accept that things will be different. You may not get to experience all of the same things you do during a typical holiday season. You may not even get to see all of the family members and friends you’re used to spending time with. Being grateful for the ability to see and spend time with anyone is what’s important. In order to develop that attitude of gratitude, focus on the present moment rather than memories of the past or thoughts of the future.

No matter how you choose to travel over the holidays, keep these tips in mind in order to keep everyone safe. Additionally, these ideas should only be used if you absolutely have to travel. If it’s possible, stay home and stay safe. The more precautions you take now against this virus, the more grateful you’ll be next year when you can hug the ones you love.

Is The Home Cold Or Is It Just Me?

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Brrr, are you shivering at home?

We all know how uncomfortable cold homes can be. More often than not, when you can’t keep the heat inside, there’s a simple solution to your problem. You need to identify where your home is losing the heated air.

The most common culprits tend to be the doors and windows. An old frame could let the cold air through. It’s typically easy to test. You can notice a significant drop in temperature around the window or the door. A little DIY can ensure you seal all the gaps and keep the warm air in. Other issues can also be tested by touch. A wall that is cool to the touch may lack proper insulation, and therefore may be cooling down your home. Similarly, if your heating units don’t cover the entire property, you can notice differences as you walk through the rooms. However, what happens when you can’t notice any significant differences, yet the home still feels cold?

Rooms need more direct light exposure
Is your home dark? No, we’re not talking about light fixtures, but also direct sunlight. A room that is bathed in natural light instantly feels warmer because our mind associates the sun with warmth. On the other hand, a dark room can be perceived as colder than it is. Additionally, lack of sun exposure can also affect your mood. The winter months can trigger seasonal affective disorder, or SAD for short, a depressive syndrome. Depression also affects the way your body regulates its temperature. In other words, when you’re feeling sad, you tend to get cold. If you find it hard to let light in through your windows, it can be a good idea to reach out to professional architecture companies to open up your rooms. An extension can bring plenty of light to dim rooms.

Too much clutter
Ah, clutter! We love getting new things, but our hoarding mentality makes it hard to keep the house tidy. Clutter can prevent healthy air circulation. While it is unlikely your clutter will block air flow at home, it can make it hard or slow for heated air to reach every room. However, the presence of clutter can lead to emotional turmoil, creating stress and depression. Feeling depressed will change the way you perceive temperature, as you become more vulnerable to cold.

The heating is too high
Are you turning the heating up without noticing any significant difference? It can seem odd, but when the heater is too high, it can affect the temperature inside your home for the worst. Indeed, heated air tends to lose moisture. When the air gets too dry, it feels colder than it is. In other words, you could get into a vicious circle when you continuously need to turn the heater up while feeling colder. How do you break the circle? You need to reintroduce a healthy humidity level to your home. Ideally, you want to aim for approximately 30% humidity in the air, which you can monitor with a sensor. Adding an air humidifier by your heating unit can completely transform the home!

Feeling cold is not something you can measure with a thermometer. When you feel cold, but the house is warm, you need to think outside the box to address the issue. In winter, we are especially vulnerable to mood swings. Make it your priority to stay happy this winter if you’re going to stay warm!
