The idea of being mindful is about observing yourself. When you start to observe yourself, you naturally practice mindfulness. If you feel that you are thinking things you should not be thinking, it's about accepting that they are there, rather than actually trying to change it. You shouldn't believe your thoughts or even take them seriously. Thoughts are things that are conditioned into us. And once we realize that thoughts are just reactions to things, we can begin to become mindful in the best possible way and change our frame of mind for the better.
