Host Candy Washington Shares 3 Self-Care Ideas for the New Year

January 5, 2021, (Los Angeles, CA) - The popular weekly podcast, Sugar Pills: A Practical Guide to Self-Care, hosted by actress, influencer, author, and executive producer, Candy Washington, has officially been selected by iHeartRadio for distribution.

The podcast empowers the listener with easy to implement tools to reclaim their self-worth and step into the highest version of themselves with practical self-care insights, expert interviews, and personal stories.

Candy is the founder of 1214 Media Productions where they create inspiring content across film, TV, digital, and publishing platforms. She’s the executive producer, writer, and star of the psychological thriller, Narcissist, which explores the effects that social media has on the mental health of influencers and their followers, which is now available on Amazon Prime Video and SofyTV.

“Self-love isn’t selfish, it’s the highest expression of gratitude to this one unique and precious life that we have been given,” says Candy. She goes on to explain that this was the sentiment that inspired her to start the self-care podcast and to executive produce the influential film.

Candy also provides three self-care tips for a more joyful and empowered New Year:

Self-Care Tip #1: Prioritize your well-being before there’s a breakdown
Don’t overextend yourself by making too many New Year’s resolutions and goals. Yes, have a vision for the New Year, but also incorporate self-care practices into your plan like taking meaningful time off, asking for support, and having healthy boundaries.

Self-Care Tip #2: Implement a morning routine
Being intentional about how you start your day sets the tone for your week, month, year, and life. Have a set time and morning routine that could include journaling, meditating, and drinking water.

Self-Care Tip #3: Take inventory of your relationships and habits
Take inventory of who you have in your life from romantic partnerships, friendships, and family, and ensure that you are only taking healthy relationships into the New Year. Cut ties with people who do not add value to your life. Do the same with your habits, take an inventory of your daily, weekly, and monthly habits, and only take into the New Year those habits that serve the highest version of yourself.

Candy was also the keynote speaker for WellnessCon and played a lead role in a digital series produced by Kelsey Grammer and Tom Russo. She's the former host of Disney Style and has appeared on The Doctors on CBS as a lifestyle expert.

She's written four books, with her latest being Triggered., a thriller about when codependency turns deadly, think: Gone Girl meets The Devil Wears Prada, which is available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and wherever books are sold.

The Warmth of Your Inner Voice  featured in

L.A. Style Magazine

It’s a warm Sunday morning in West Hollywood, and I can feel the sunbeams peeking their way through my blinds, determined to interrupt my sleep. As an entrepreneur, Sunday’s are one of the few days of the week that I let myself sleep in, so I’m holding a playful grudge against the sun. I roll over and stretch my entire body and then I set my intention for the day, “Today, it is my intention to relax, release, and enjoy my day off.” I’ve quickly learned over the years of building up my own on-camera, blogging, social media, and consulting business, from the ground up, that if you don’t take the time to slow down, enjoy the process, and allow yourself to relax, then you’ll inevitably burnout, breakdown, and extinguish the flame that once ignited your soul. Setting my intention for every morning allows me to be grounded and focused throughout the day and serves as a guiding force for my actions. If I need to buckle down and pitch brands, catch up on emails, or create a strategy for a campaign, then I set the intention for productivity. On the days that I need to edit and shoot photos, write, design, or record a podcast, I set my intention for creativity. I let my intention be the wave that I ride throughout my day. I also make sure to periodically check-in with myself to ensure that I’m present in what I’m actually doing at the moment and not operating on auto-pilot. This ensures that I’m paying attention to my intuition and gut feelings, which is one of the most powerful resources we have as human beings and is what I’ve always based my most important life decisions upon.

Never underestimate or ignore the power of your inner guide, that little voice of your higher self that whispers in your ear, because it’s there to gently guide you to the next right direction of your life. I’ve found that meditating, focusing on your breath, practicing mindfulness, and being present in your stillness are transformative ways to tap into discerning the voice of your inner guide. Journaling is another powerful way to get in touch with how you’re feeling and use it as a tool to take inventory of what themes are recurring in your life. As I’m lying in bed, basking in the warmth of the sunbeams that are now dancing on my sheets, still not quite awake yet not quite sleep, I send unconditional love, support, and protection to my mind, body, and soul. I can feel the warmth of my inner thoughts wash over my body and penetrate my subconscious mind. Bathing myself in self-affirming mantras is how I cultivate a healthy and loving relationship with myself.

Consciously elevating your self-belief is fundamentally one of the most effective ways to live a more fulfilled and complete life, because every relationship that you will ever have is a direct reflection of the relationship that you have with yourself. This means the relationship that you have with your family, friends, lovers, spouses, and to your career, is just a manifestation of the relationship that you have with yourself. If you don’t love yourself, you cannot love others, and if you don’t respect yourself, others cannot respect you.

Once I internalized this principle, everything changed for me. My validation and self-worth came from me, my internal source, rather than some external person or perceived success, therefore nothing and no one could ever take away my inherent value as a human being. I am here, therefore, my life is meaningful, and who I am matters.

This was the essence of why I wrote my first book, Sugar Pills: 10 Days to Awaken Your Inner Power, because it’s imperative to know that our work is what we do and it does not define who we are. The book is an interactive journal and guide that shares actionable insights on how to elevate your self-esteem and self-confidence through self-love.

I wanted to share how I learned how to separate being my authentic self with the public persona that we often take on as ‘the parent of,’ ‘the spouse of,’ ‘the sibling of,’ ‘the boss of,’ ‘the founder of,’ ‘the creator of’ and so on. Once we are able to tear back the layers of the titles that we wear, it’s revealed that we are all intrinsically the same and inherently connected.

It’s extremely humbling and empowering to know that we are not in it alone, but that we are all the same shadow and light versions of ourselves, dancing our way through life. I now know that I have the power to set my own intentions. I have the power to determine my level of self-love, self-esteem, and self-worth. I have the power to choose the trajectory of my life and create my own destiny. I have the power to wake up every morning and to choose joy. I have the power – and so do you.

Candy Washington shares an excerpt from Sugar Pills: 10 Days to Awaken Your Inner Power. The book is an interactive journal and guide to shifting your mindset to unlock your inner creativity, confidence and power. Each chapter features a motivational and informative journal entry that guides you in observing your own thoughts, actions, and feelings along with an interactive guide where you can journal along with each actionable insight. *You can find Sugar Pills: 10 Days to Awaken Your Inner Power, on Amazon and on Amazon Kindle.

“Awakening the Power of Perseverance”

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”– Maya Angelou

When I decided to make my fateful leap from my cushy, yet stifling, corporate job in New York City, to embark on my journey to becoming a full-time, self-sustaining creative professional in Los Angeles, I never knew how wildly fulfilling it would be, but I also never imagined how challenging and down-right petrifying it would get.

There were days where I would sit in my car and just cry. First, I hated driving, I hated my car, and I hated being stuck in gridlock traffic. It was the physical manifestation of the gridlock and overwhelm going on my mind and life. I would get completely frustrated with trying to juggle paying bills, booking gigs, staying true to myself, trying to make new friends in a big city, staying fit and healthy, being mind-blowingly homesick, and struggling with whether or not I had made the right decision.

But even though I had those moments of crying, screaming, and yelling like a mad woman in my car while at a red light, I was also blessed with moments of utter elation, peace, and comfort knowing that I was in exactly the right place, at exactly the right time.

I was able to experience these moments, not because I’m manic, but because I learned to accept that in life, we will inevitably encounter highs and lows, especially when you are moving toward your goals and dreams without a societal safety net. The trick is to embrace change and knowing to let go of the things that you cannot control, because there is a lesson in every experience that we go through in life.

Looking back at the moments that I felt like giving up and that all was lost, I learned a few key insights that helped me make it through the tough times and empowered me with the wisdom to make and future challenges easier to face.

AWAKENING YOUR INNER POWER INSIGHT

The Power of Perseverance: “Steve Harvey was homeless and lived in his car for 3 years, but he didn’t give up. He kept going and he kept fighting the good fight. If your dream is worth having, it’s worth fighting for even when things get tough. You can’t let perceived failures or setbacks stop you from pursuing what you are called to do in this world. Often times, what we think is a setback is actually the biggest set-up for something amazing to manifest in your life, you just have to keep going in order to get it.”

Power Tip: “The majority of the time, you need to learn the lesson that failures and setbacks are meant to teach you in order to prepare you and equip you the necessary wisdom and experience to handle your success. It’s strengthening you so your successful becomes a blessing and not a burden.”

FEATURE: The Giving Keys Interview on Forgiveness with Candy Washington

Self-CareCandy WashingtonComment

As featured on The Giving Keys.

I’m Candy Washington – I’m a content creator, author, actress and at my core, I’m a storyteller.

Candy_Washington_-_Forgiveness_6db55b18-eb1f-4055-8ec2-c22a54417e30.jpg

The most powerful story of forgiveness that I’m a part of would probably be with my father.  He wasn’t really present in my life and I had to learn how to accept that and see him as a person, not as an ideal and forgive myself for thinking that I was less than without him.

To me, forgiveness means having compassionate accountability for yourself and for others. That really creates a space to let go in a way that removes guilt, blame and shame.

I think forgiveness is challenging because it makes it seem as though you are agreeing that what the person did was ok or that somehow that you were hurt by isn’t justified. So I think sometimes it’s difficult to forgive because you that you are giving away your power but the truth is that it’s the opposite, you are actually empowering yourself with the ability to move on and to let go and to take that negative energy and turning it into something positive that you can use and move forward with.

I think it’s easier to forgive people because if you feel that you have to be forgiven you have to admit that you did something wrong. I think sometimes when you have to admit that you did something wrong it can bruise the ego because the ego wants to stay in the state of  ‘I’m right and you’re wrong.’ So to be forgiven means you have to acknowledge that you made a mistake, that you did something wrong and that your actions hurt someone else and that you have to be accountable for those decisions. Sometimes people ask for forgiveness but you can tell it’s very surface like 'Oh yeah I’m sorry' or 'I’m sorry you felt that way' - being kind of dismissive, I think it takes a bigger person to say, 'Please forgive me for what I did.'

For me, being able to ask for forgiveness has really come from a place of self-reflection and self-awareness and acknowledging that you don’t have to have judgment around what happens to you or what you do. We’re all humans and by design we make mistakes. Being forgiven and asking for forgiveness is just a part of our human experience. When you don’t personalize it like, 'I am wrong,' 'I am bad' or 'I am awful' and you kind of allow yourself to have a healthy distance from where you did something wrong and I made a mistake but I am not that mistake and that doesn’t make me wrong, the event and the act is wrong. When you can separate your person from the action it’s much easier to say please forgive me for what I did because you know who I am.

I think it’s imperative that we think about forgiveness not just in our individual lives but also when it comes to the collective consciousness of the world and what’s happening locally, nationally and internationally. I think we need to forgive people who we think are going against what we believe, what we think is right, what we think we should be doing. Once you’re able to forgive past actions and past transgressions then you open up a space for healthy dialogue and you can say this is what I believe, this is what I think, let me actually hear and listen to your perspective. As long as you’re defending your position, you’re not listening and your're not open to learning about a different perspective or someone else’s experience. I can have my opinion and you can have your opinion and they both can coexist without one person being bad and one person being good.  As long as we think I’m always right, you’re not growing and you’re not moving forward. I think a lot of our leaders are stuck on 'this is the way we’ve always done it,' this is the way we’re always going to do it that they’re not actually thinking about what’s best and most beneficial now that will create a better world moving forward.

I use forgiveness to move myself forward primarily through self-forgiveness. I tend to be really hard on myself – I always want to get the A+, I want the gold star. I have a lot of inner critic chatter that I have to check so the way I do that is through self-forgiveness. The tool I use is really simple, two words, ‘so what’? I didn’t book that gig I really wanted, so what? I’m still here, I’m still alive, I’m still moving forward, I still have my friends, I still have my family. The world is still spinning. When I’m at peace and happy with myself then I’m showing up for my friends and my family and my audience. I’m showing up in a full way because I’m full first.

The way I nurture my capacity for self-forgiveness is through journaling. I like to write down things like how am I feeling right now? What are the reoccurring thoughts I’m thinking? What are patterns are showing up and looking at them in a loving way and not a critical way? I also meditate – I’ll light a candle and count down and get really still and centered. These are things you can try out this week and see how they work for you!

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE: The Giving Keys Discussion with Candy Washington

Business, EntrepreneurshipCandy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

I wanted to quickly share with you my recent spotlight feature on The Giving Keys. You can read it on their site here, and below!

Hope you enjoy!

What led you to transition out of a big company and into the more entrepreneurial route of creating ‘Actress with Style’ - your own personal brand?

Becoming an entrepreneur was just the next natural step for me. In my corporate jobs, I learned about building profitable brands, generating press, and fostering relationships, which is the foundation for anyone trying to create their own brand.

I knew that I had a vision for my own life and a brand that I wanted to build and I decided to take the leap and go for it rather than stay stuck on the corporate ladder working to make other people rich and fulfill someone else's dream.

I also wanted to live my life on my own terms and the bureaucracy that comes with a corporate job wasn't a fit for my free spirit. Additionally, I knew that my voice was meaningful and I wanted a platform to share it that wasn't dependent on someone else deciding that what I said had meaning.

If you had to choose one character trait that defines or drives your success what would it be?

I would define my character trait that defines my success as relentlessness. I think that we need to be relentless in our pursuit of our dreams, but never ruthless. We can be successful without losing our moral compass.

Do you feel that having a diversity in interests and influence is the key to finding success in the modern age of social media?

I think it really depends on the person. It depends on what your personal passions are and what your capacity level is to give to your professional endeavors. For me, I'm a storyteller and content creator. So everything that I do is just an extension of that, whether it's acting, hosting, consulting, or doing social media campaigns.

Success, to me, is just deciding every day to do what you're passionate about, regardless of fear. I think to have success in the age of social media is to not let social media define you or determine your self-worth, but to use it as tool to build your brand and to create a community.

I also believe that we're all influential, just some people have bigger platforms, so we should all be mindful of what we're putting out there, because all of our voices are valuable.

On The Billionaire Blogger Society you talked about working on your inner self (self-esteem, happiness, etc.) to improve as an influencer. What parts of yourself have you had to work on over the years and what would you still like to improve on?

The biggest thing that I had to overcome was feeling the need to always “be on” and “be busy.” It was hard for me to take breaks and not feel guilty for not pitching, working, emailing, posting, etc. I had to learn how to slow down, be intentional, and allow myself to enjoy the flow of life.

I think that we're all works in progress, so I'm always looking to improve, learn, grow, and share.

What direction do you want to take yourself and your brand towards in the coming years? Do you have an ultimate goal?

My ultimate goal is what I'm doing right now. Enjoying my life and my career while adding value to the lives of others through storytelling. So it's my hope to continue to do this and do it on a bigger scale.

In addition to my other endeavors, I've also started taking on private clients for 1-On-1 Self-Care Sessions, to join me, you can visit here.
