The best view in L.A.: Yamashiro Hollywood

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Last night I had the pleasure of dining at Yamashiro Hollywood. It by far has one of the best views of the Los Angeles skyline that I have ever seen. There was also supposed to be a Perseid meteor shower with shooting stars, although it was a bit hazy, I definitely think I saw some!

yamashiro view candy washington.JPG

If you ever decide to grab a meal there I highly recommend the Asian BBQ Baby Back Ribs. The ribs were so tender they literally melted off of the bone and the meal comes with a kale salad, cornbread, and mashed sweet potatoes. The Yuzu Lychee and Raspberry Drop cocktails were super yummy and refreshing as well.

I decided to rock my pink and yellow tube dress paired with a black blazer and dark grey wedges. As always, you can shop my favorite fashion pieces here.

Let me know some of your favorite places to dine with a view and don't forget to share this post if you like it!

Up close and personal with music maven Jordannah Elizabeth

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

So lately I've been feeling particularly nostalgic about my days in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and have been missing the crisp NYC nights, late-night indie band shows, and sharing hazy memories of the night before over bagels and coffee. It's  city that haunts you just as much as it inspires you.

Speaking of inspiration, I had the fortune of meeting Jordannah Elizabeth, a musician, singer, and writer, during my time in Williamsburg. She has since moved to San Franscisco and I'm in L.A., but she continues to be a source of inspiration from coast-to-coast.

She has a new book coming out that is being published by Zero Books, it's entitled, Don't Lose Track Vol. 1: Essays, Articles, and Q&A's by Jordannah Elizabeth, you can check out more details on the press release, here. Zero books is also publishing a series of her articles as she is a music journalist who has written for VICE Magazine, SF Weekly and MTV.

Listen here for a sneak peak to the folk soul inspired album, Borders, that was recently featured in Impose Magazine.

Interview with music maven and journalist, Jordannah Elizabeth:

Candy Washington: How did you get your start in the music industry?
Jordannah Elizabeth: I got started in the music industry by managing a band when I was 17 years old and was attending college. I booked an independent regional tour and helped my friends promote their music. I had no idea what I was doing. It was all instinct. My mother and father were social people though. My mom hosted events and social hours with her female friends and colleagues and my father had us going to a lot of social church events because he was a preacher. My parents also had a little radio show when we were very young, so I think watching them do those things gave me a natural understand of organizing events and tours.

It was really fun. Later I became a flier girl for AEG Live Rocky Mountain and interned at art galleries and eventually became a curator at 19 years old.

CW: What have been some of your most memorable highs and lows?
JE: High: Was playing to a great crowd at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco.
High: Talking/meeting musicians and artists I used to save my lunch money to buy their records
High: Writing Best Albums of the Year for Nerve.com
Low: Being very very very poor at the beginning of my career
Low: Losing opportunities because people judged me by my ages, the way I looked, gender and social media.
Low: Getting kidney stones before my first West Coast string of show.

CW: How would you describe personal style and musical sound?
JE: My sound is heavy - rootsy. There are a lot of low tones and the energy of my music has a seperate personality than I do as a human being. My style is improvised roots folk. I always play barefoot. I talk to the crowd, I don't talk at them. I just played a show and people tell me my music and performance is unique, that it can't really be compared to other artists. I try not to play often because I want to be very present, emotional and full when I play. I try to record often because I have a lot of feelings. I also like to experiment.

CW: What was the inspiration behind the album?
JE: Borders on a map, limitations, boundaries - isolation, martyrdom. I know that sounds a bit depressing, but it's just an observation. I write about things I don't really understand. My albums are usually me working through things. When I start an album I'm usually in the middle of a conundrum or personal phase - my issues usually work themselves out soon after an album is complete. Maybe I can see the ending coming and my albums are just prepartion for me to analyze, realize and let go...not really sure.

I explore gospel music again in Borders, as I did with my last album, A Rush and its opening song, A Prayer for Black America. I explore Black spirituals, roots and blues music, soul music and gospel with "Charleston (Settled in the Lord)". The other tracks, "Borders", "Run Away" and "How Hard Can it Be?" exhibit more of my personal minimalist style.

CW: Congrats on your new book coming out, can you tell us about the meaning behind the book and what we will learn?
JE: The book is 40 selected essays, articles and interviews I've written over the past few years. I am a professional arts and culture journalist. I wouldn't call that my day job. It is just something I love to do. You'll learn about my writing voice. You'll learn about raw journalistic instinct. I don't have a degree in journalism or creative writing, so it's all from the heart and from my gut. The articles vary and include some high profile stars in it.

CW: What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?
JE: Be mature and have a bit of business sense. I know I'll get in trouble for saying this, but NOTHING happens without, goals, education, strategy and being able to listen to mentors and people who understand the industry. Eventually, you will need a publicist, agent and assistant. It's ok. It's not evil, especially if you want to make a living with your art.

Stay humble - you poop just like a homeless person, a stay at home mom, a garbage man or cocktail waitress. Be cool. Help people out just to be nice.. It's good for the soul...it's not all about your band. We all need real friends around us to tell us the truth sometimes. We can't surround ourselves with everyone who is reaching for a golden ring - we need grounded people who have different interests and perspective to help us grow and stay in touch with reality.

CW: If you could collaborate with any musician, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
JE: Patti Smith - when I lived in NYC, I was poor. I got a crap paying job in the financial district and had to surf cheap hotels on the lower west side to make it to work every day. I stayed in spots she stayed Patti stayed in when she was broke. I wanted to be like her. I stayed in the Chelsea Hotel before they turned it into a residential apartment building. I wanted to be like Basquiat- I tasted that world...but honestly, I'd just want to take a couple of acoustic guitars and jam with her.

CW: Anything else you want to share with my readers?
JE: You're heart will stay in a perpetual state of brokenness for the rest of your life. Something will always be heavy on your heart, but don't let that stop you from doing anything or loving anyone. Don't wait for things to be "perfect" to do something beautiful for someone.

The Single Gal's Survival Guide to Wedding Season with SkinnyTox Wellness Tea

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

As a single gal in the middle of surviving summer wedding season, one of the top things on my list is making sure that I feel happy, whole, healthy, and confident from the inside-out while jet-setting from coast-to-coast, and answering the age-old question, “So, how are you still single?”

My number one secret weapon to surviving wedding season and unleashing my most happy and fulfilled inner self is SkinnyTox Wellness Tea.

It’s a refreshing and functional tea that aids with overall wellness from weight loss, enhancing energy, detoxing, and boosting my metabolism.  The tea can be served hot or cold and is infused with a 14 fruit and herb blend. It’s 100% natural, organic, and has a pleasant taste.

You just enjoy one cup in the morning 30 minutes before breakfast and one cup 30 minutes before bed at night for 14-days.

See why the SkinnyTox Wellness Tea is my must-have below along with my other key tips on surviving wedding season as a happy, confident, and hot single gal:

Tip #1: Do a 14-day SkinnyTox Wellness Tea cleanse

The SkinnyTox Wellness Tea cleanse has four key benefits:

Weight loss: A key benefit of consistently drinking the SkinnyTox Wellness Tea is the reduction of inflammation, bloating, and water weight, leaving you feeling lighter and leaner.

Increased metabolism: You can burn more calories in a shorter period of tea when drinking SkinnyTox Wellness Tea, which adds an extra boost and benefit to your workouts and yoga sessions.

Clean and detoxify your system: SkinnyTox Wellness Tea helps to neutralize and eliminate toxins in your liver and colon while drinking the detox tea comprised of 14 fresh fruits, herbs, and tea.

Energy boost: Get a renewed, recharged, and rejuvenated mind, body, and spirit. Be sure to incorporate meditation, exercise, clean diet, and an active lifestyle while doing the SkinnyTox cleanse.

BREW GUIDE:

Frequency: Daily - 30 Min. Before Breakfast

Vessel: 6-8 Oz. Teacup (177-236ml)

Temperature: 175 F / 79 C

Dose: 1 Sachet

Infusions: 1-2

Time: 3-4 Minutes

Tip #2: Get fit and active

Note that I didn’t say ‘lose weight’ or get ‘in shape.’ But by getting active, going to the gym, hiking, yoga, pilates, walking instead of driving, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, whatever it maybe, but by getting active and fit, you will boost your confidence and endurance. This will shine through and make you feel great while rocking your bridesmaids dress, cocktail dress, or evening gown. You’ll be feeling so confident and secure that you’ll have that extra energy boost to shut down the dance floor.

Tip #3: Leave negative Nancy at the door

Let’s be honest, nobody likes a negative Nancy that just goes on-and-on about her past relationships or how unhappy she is with being single and lonely.

My advice? Get over it and get happy.

Remember that the wedding is about celebrating the union of your friends, not a reason to throw yourself a pity party. So be positive and focus on enjoying the champagne toasts, catching up with your college friends, dancing the night away, posting pics on Instagram, indulging in that second piece of wedding cake, and getting a night cap with the hot single drummer from the band.

Own your singleness, let go, and have fun!

Tip #4: Have a partner-in-crime

Whether it’s another single gal, your GBFF, or your bestie that’s married/engaged/in a long-term relationship, make sure you have a partner-in-crime in place to hang out with the night before, grab brunch with, and share the experience of celebrating your friend’s wedding and to party with at the reception. Because let’s face it, the best part of being a single gal during summer wedding season, is that you never know who you’re going to meet. So be brave and ask the cute best man for a dance!

Tested on Film Stars, Not on Animals: Tara Smith Haircare

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

After spending hours on the beach in the sun, dipping in and out the pool, and flat-ironing my hair for nights out in the summer heat, one thing that’s always on my mind is how to keep my hairstyle looking fresh and healthy during the hot summer months and always being on-the-go.

Luckily for me, U.K. celebrity hairstylist, Tara Smith, is launching her award-winning haircare line here in the U.S this summer. Her clients have included some of my favorite actors from Demi Moore, Rosario Dawson, Marisa Tomei, to Gerald Butler.

The exclusive 12-product line is infused with Performance Botanical Technology and what makes her line truly different from the rest, other than leaving your hair healthy, strong, and glowing, but all of her products are toxin-free, gluten-free, and 100% vegan. If you want nourished hair from root to tip, then check out the full line here.

Tara’s personal mantra is, “Be kind, be beautiful, be healthy,” and it shines through in all of her products that are environmentally friendly and non-harmful to your hair and is safe enough for everyday use. Speaking of shine, my favorite product from her high-performance collection is the Shining Moment Glosser, which leaves my hair leaves my hair with a natural glisten and soft to the touch. For an insider look into the celebrity stylist imaginative and creative mind, check out my interview with Tara below:

Interview with celebrity hairstylist, Tara Smith:

Candy Washington: What are your style secrets for achieving the perfect summer beach hair?
Tara Smith: Beachy waves are always in during the summer and are such an easy, fresh and natural look.

To achieve, 1. Shampoo and condition (I like TARA SMITH GORGEOUSLY GENTLE) to prep and properly hydrate hair. Use a wide tooth comb to get out any tangles. 2. Apply an anti-frizz serum – the miraculous TARA SMITH BASE COAT SERUM is perfect for this, to set the stage for the look. 3. Finger curl the hair, starting from the front and going completely all around your hair. 4. Let hair air dry. 5. Finish any pieces that still look like they need more bend with the light touch of a curling iron.

CW: How can we play summer trends in beauty with our hairstyles?
TS:So many of my celebrity clients ask this same question, for their down time and personal lives. My favorite trends include loose knots or slicking back the hair in true rock n roll fashion, with my TARA SMITH ROCK ON HARD GEL. One thing that everyone can do is accessorize – like you do with jewelry, accessorize your hair, from flowered headbands to jeweled head pieces, the sky is the limit to achieve a cool laid back summer look or a super-sexy sparkly look.

CW:  Any advice for aspiring hairstylists?
TS: My advice is to follow your dream and matter to your clients, by caring about how their hair looks AND how it feels. I created TARA SMITH HAIRCARE to both perform AND be good for your hair – because looking good and feeling good shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

Fashion doesn't matter in a Devil Wears Prada world

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

When I think back to my very first job interview after graduating Georgetown University, I cringe at what I wore. I somehow scored an interview at Louis Vuitton for a public relations internship even though I had zero fashion experience and zero connections in the industry. All I had was my instincts, a killer cover letter, and a will to succeed.

CANDY WASHINGTON FASHION BLOG

I turned to my older sisters for guidance on what to wear, since I had never interviewed before. Mind you, my sisters all work in corporate America and are much more conservative than I am in the fashion department. We trucked it to the local mall and headed into the Macy's women suits department. After trying on long grey skirts, a bunch of blazers and button-ups, I settled on a black power-suit: a conservative black blazer, a silk crème top, and tailored black pants with black pumps.

At a mere 4'11'', I looked like a 12-year old girl that had dressed up like Mommy for 'Take Your Child To Work Day.'

When I showed up at the interview, the lovely ladies joked if I was there because of a corporate career change. My power-suit stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the pencil skirts, printed designer tops, DVF wrap dresses, Louis Vuitton bags, and red-bottom pumps. But as a fresh-faced college grad that had never been exposed to the fashion world of NYC, except for being obsessed with The Devil Wears Prada, I didn't know to be self-conscious. I just knew to be myself, to trust my instincts, and to know that I would succeed.

Devil Wears Prada.jpg

When I sat down for the interview, I took off my blazer, smiled, and just answered the questions as myself. Not as someone that needed to prove herself or to fit in. Then I was brought into the showroom and I swear that there was an angelic glow that radiated from the room as the door opened.

This was my final test. How would I arrange the showroom? If Vogue called and needed looks for their jungle-themed March issue featuring Jessica Alba, what pieces would I pull? I kicked off my black pumps, (figuratively, not literally) and got to work. And this is where my instincts kicked in. I didn't need to be wearing the latest Marc Jacobs dress or carry a Birkin bag, I just needed to trust my eye for the art and storytelling aspects of the fashion world and not be afraid to bring it to life.

Needless to say, I got the internship and I haven't looked back since. Now I fearlessly rock acid-wash leggings, 5-inch wedges, and statement shirts, but my black power-suit still hangs in my closet at my mom's house as a reminder that there's really one thing that I ever to need wear, and that's my confidence.

But if I had to do it all over again, these are the current looks that I would rock during my interview:

SHOP THE THE PERFECT FASHION INTERVIEW OUTFIT BY CLICKING HERE:

Violeta by Mango Satin Collar Crepe Blazer: The silhouette of this blazer is timeless and can easily go from day-to-night. Wearing it in white shows off your fashion sense while still looking professional.

Chicnova Fashion Slim Fit Round Neck Sleeveless Dress: Peplum was so last season. This dress is reminiscent of one of the looks from Dolce & Gabbana's Spring/Summer 2015 Ready-to-Wear runway show but without the embellishments to make it more office-appropriate.

Rosantica Bianca Gold-dipped Necklace: Add a bit of bling to your look without going over-the-top. Fashion designer, TV personality, author, and stylist, Rachel Zoe was seen wearing a chunkier version of a gold necklace while sitting front row at the Calvin Klein Collection Spring/Summer 2015 Ready-to-Wear runway show.

Lipsy Maxy Cross Strap Heels: According to the Pantone's Fashion Color Report, cobalt blue was the it color for Fall. Adding a pop of this color to your interview outfit shows that you can incorporate trends without being too matchy-matchy.

Pre-owned Prada Saffiano Luxe Tote: Ok, so maybe the devil does wear Prada, so why can't I?Since this would be an investment piece for me, I would get it in nude so I could wear it with as many different outfits as possible. It also says to my future employers that I'm stylish yet practical.

What was your most memorable job interview? Have you ever had any Devil Wears Prada moments?

Vans Warped Tour and Interview with Truth Campaign Tour Rider Angela Ying

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Did you catch the truth campaign’s latest Left Swipe Dat video? Check it out below! Also, check out my interview with a "truth tour" rider, Angela Ying, who's a Public Health major at Brigham Young University and works for the American Red Cross.

It's an awesome project, learn more below and how you can get involved!

Becky G and Fifth Harmony teamed up with truth as well as King Bach, Grace Helbig, Harley Morenstein and AlphaCat to call attention to the impact that smoking images have.

This summer the truth campaign is traveling across the country – empowering this generation to use their power and creativity to end tobacco use for good.

For the 15th year, the truth tour will have two crews of truth “tour riders” who will hit the road from June through September and connect with more than one million young people at over 100 stops including stops on the Vans Warped Tour and the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.

The tour riders will have a singular message to young people: let’s be the generation to “Finish It” and end tobacco use for good.

The full schedule for the tour is available at: thetruth.com/events

Candy Washington: What inspired you to get involved with the truth Campaign?

Angela Ying: I was inspired to get involved with the truth campaign because I remember watching the truth commercials growing up and just being in shock by what I saw. I always thought to myself, “Why would anyone ever want to touch a cigarette when all these facts are out here plain and simple?” Those ads played a huge part in my decision to never smoke. Knowing that about 1 out of 3 youth smokers will eventually die from a tobacco-related disease, I wanted to get involved and make a difference in the world. I wanted to inspire other teens and young adults and show them that they didn’t have to smoke to have fun. I’ve also always wanted to combine my passions for public health issues and touring in the music industry, so when I heard about the truth tour rider position, I applied right away.

CW: What has surprised you the most while being on the Vans Warped Tour?

AY: The most surprising thing to me while being out on the Vans Warped Tour is how open teens have been about talking about cigarettes and tobacco. Every 6 seconds, someone in the world dies from a smoking-related disease and when I hear stories from so many people about how tobacco has impacted their lives, it makes that statistic so much more personal and real. Some stories have brought me close to tears and those personal shares remind me that the truth campaign does change and make a difference in lives. It makes the truth message and my role in sharing that message with others that much more important to me.

CW: How can we get involved and help out in the movement?

AY: Visit thetruth.com and sign up to #FinishIt! The teen smoking rate is at 8% now, which is down from 23% in 2000, and we need everyone’s help in joining forces to get that down to 0%! You can also “X” your profile picture on social media to show that you are committed to being a part of the generation to end smoking.

CW: What's not to be missed during the tour?

AY: Anything that’s happening at the truth truck! We have live music by the DJ J. Dayz all day long and fun, interactive games. The lip-sync competitions in the truth zone are always a blast too and can get pretty intense, which is awesome.

CW: As a self-described hippie, how has that helped you connect with others during the movement?

AY: I’m all about being eco-friendly and trying my best to protect the earth. Most people don’t know that about 1.69 billion pounds of butts end up as toxic trash each year. The environmental impact of cigarette butts is a really easy way to connect with teens about the issue of smoking if they haven’t necessarily been personally impacted by tobacco. Due to the fact that cigarette butts are the number one littered item around the world, everyone is impacted by cigarettes. truth is all about sharing facts in a casual, comfortable way, and I think my laidback personality also makes me easily approachable.

CW: Anything else you want to share with my readers?

AY: Follow truth on Twitter and Instagram at @truthorange to see our adventures on the road! We also do awesome stuff year-round so you don’t want to miss out. And if you’re in the area, make sure to check us out on tour. The schedule is: thetruth.com/events. We want to hang out with each and every one of you!
