Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

I not only love bringing you the latest trends, new emerging designers, what you missed at Fashion Week, and what's the next big thing in fashion, but I also love sharing with you some of the best tips and tools of the trade to navigate a successful career in the fashion industry.

So of course, we attended one of the most coveted fashion and beauty networking conferences, the Simply Stylist Conference, 'Do What You Love,' in Los Angeles, CA at The Grove presented by Citi.

During the conference, which is aimed at giving aspiring fashion, beauty, and tech entrepreneurs a platform to learn how to jumpstart their careers, you could network with up-and-coming peers along with industry vets.

Depending on your level of engagement, VIP Fashionista, Fashion & Lover, or Social Butterfly, you could learn from expert panelists including stylists, designers, bloggers, and entrepreneurs ranging from Catt Sadler, Alessandra Ambrosio (Model, Designer), Cara Santana, Wendy Nguyen, Jen Chae, Marcy Guevera, Maria Hatzistefanis, Stassi Schroeder, Michael Costello, Ashley Fultz, Joey Maalouf, Mary Alice Haney, Christy Coleman, Calli Cholodenko, Jenny Bernheim, Jon Reyman, and Anita Patrickson.

When you weren't in one of the engaging panelist discussions, you could enjoy the brand experience area where you could get manicures, snack on yummy treats, drink cocktails, get your make-up done, grab a massage, fashion illustrations, pizza, photos, and more, all while meeting and connecting with like-minded career-driven fashionistas.

One of the best career tips given? Do it. Start your blog, start designing, reach out on social media, and don't forget that when you are out at events and networking, sit next to people that you don't know and make an effort to connect with strangers. You never which encounter will change your life.

Writer and Producer Spotlight: Mara Brock Akil

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

One of my favorite shows on television is Being Mary Jane starring the Gabrielle Union. What I admire most about the show is its rawness, truth, authenticity, and that it dares "to go there" when few shows do.

So of course, my next selection for my "Spotlight Series" goes to the creator, writer, and producer of the show, Mara Brock Akil

See below for why she shines.

Why she shines: Mara not only gives African-American women a voice and a platform that shines a light on the issues that we go through and challenges that we face, but she truly speaks to all women.

She has the uncanny ability to convey such a level of universality that all women can relate to while the situations and characters that she develops are extremely specific.

Her vision and creativity is why the show is such a hit and why we admire her.

Show her some love on:

3 Key Takeaways from LA Fashion Market

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

As Fashion Month continues to roll on, fashion week in Los Angeles is in full swing, which means so are the trade shows and fashion market. Obviously LA Fashion Market is conductive at a much smaller scale than those of New York, London, Paris, and Milan, but it still tries to hold its own.

While perusing showroom to showroom at the California Market center and hoping from the Select trade show, Athleisure + Lifestyle, we've uncovered three key takeaways from the shows that encompasses what the could improve to catch up with the rest of the fashion markets and what they are doing right as the West Coast fashion epicenter.

Takeaway #1: The coolest brands set the trends, they don't care about them
One booth that instantly stood out from the rest was A. Marie Jewelry. Dainty, long, and handmade pieces hung on the displays and caught my eye because this season the statement necklace is still king, so seeing smaller, more delicate pieces was a nice departure from the trend that dominated the runways and the magazines.

The bohochic collection is a combination of semiprecious stones, leather, and fine metals. All pieces are made in Los Angeles and have been handmade since 2007. The looks are perfect for the upcoming festival season with Coachella, SXSW, Austin City Limits, Governor's Ball, and more.

Another breakout brand was Streets Ahead, Inc. Their collection included leather handbags and belts, along with gold and precious metals accessories.

Takeaway #2: The 70's are here to stay and other fashion trends
By now we all know that the biggest trend this season, and seemingly a few beyond, is the 70's. This was only reinforced during LA Fashion Market. Almost every brand from Louie Lucie, Beautiful Stories, Desigual, Alice's Pig, Traffic People, Darling, Naama Bezalel, Poppy Lux, Dex, Closet, Pit, and Sugar Hill, displayed the key trends to rock and stock your stores with this season:

  • Leather

  • Fringe

  • Fur

  • Long coats

  • Military-inspired

  • Denim everything

  • Circular bags

  • Nudes

  • Wide-legged pants

  • Statement accessories

  • Wedges and platforms

  • Vintage pieces

  • Layered necklaces

  • Crop tops

  • Colored and mixed fabrications

  • Floral prints

  • Chunky sweaters

Takeaway #3: Take a few cues from the New York Fashion Trade Shows
New York is the It City for fashion, runway shows, trade shows, trendsetting, and setting the pulse for the fashion temperature around the world. Thus, it would make sense if LA Fashion Market took a few cues from New York to up their fashion game.

Cue #1: Create a buzz and conversation on social media: There were basically no hashtags, online check-ins, or online conversation around LA Fashion Market. In today's digital world, you have to create a community around your events to drive attendance, awareness, and sales.

Cue #2: Expand your horizons: LA Fashion Market is done on a much smaller level than New York's, but it needs to expand its horizons and incorporate a wider variety of brands, both well-established, emerging, and eco-friendly. The booths begin to blur because there is too much repetition of the same old brands that we see year and after year. LA Fashion Market needs to diversify the brands and booths that they feature.

Share your #NewCarFace experience with Cars.com

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Now that I'm an official Cali-girl, one of my favorite accessories is my coveted car. Like Carrie said in “Sex and the City,” the handbag to the fashionista in New York is what the car is the fashionista in LA.

Luckily for us, Cars.com is our fierce fashion ally when it comes finding the perfect arm candy on wheels and is a such a great partner and sponsor of this post.

When it was time for me to buy a new car for my new chapter in Los Angeles from always-on-the-subway New York City, I had my mother as my car shopping companion. I wanted to buy a Jeep but was a bit hesitant due to the ever-rising gas prices, but I knew I didn't want a small car either. My mother agreed as she also feels larger cars are safer and I needed one that could carry all of my stuff across the country to my new home in West Hollywood.

We drove around different car lots and then spotted this burgundy Buick Rendezvous, and we both smiled and knew that we found, 'the one.' I test drove the car, the first time I'd driven in about five years, and was able to maneuver the car and I felt comfortable driving in it. I chatted with my mom and drove off the lot 45 minutes later and then off to Los Angeles. It was my awesome #newcarface experience and I still love driving my 'Baby Buick' around the streets of LA.

LE FRENCHLAB Brings its Signature Edge to Los Angeles Fashion Week

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Check out the details on one of the coolest fashion runway shows during LA Fashion Week.

Le Frenchlab's partnership with cool-kid boutique The Well revealed the next class of emerging cult-fave designers and artists.

Le Frenchlab welcomed over 300 guests at the FRE(n)SH Los Angeles Fashion Week event Friday night, March 13th, 2015 at The Well. Sponsors included T.U.K. Shoes, ZICO© Premium Coconut Water, Clover Juice, wet n wild cosmetics, M. Steves Skincare.

French influence is definitely upping the cool factor in fashion for Los Angeles. Hailing from Clermont-Ferrand (Auvergne, France), Creative Director Emmanuelle Rienda is back to launch her fashion incubator and artist collective, Le Frenchlab. The concept showroom comes after years of hard work as a french culture curator and entrepreneur, and although her own work has been featured throughout Paris and in magazines like Elle and Glamour, her latest project is all about the work of others. For Los Angeles Fashion Week, Rienda involves an elite team of creatives eager to execute the vision. "My aim is to curate, present and establish French creatives in the United States and develop concepts that highlight emerging creatives with a common DNA in order to successfully promote their art in the vibrant American fashion, music and art worlds."

After an industry meet and greet, the 7:30pm fashion show opened with male models and avant-garde French designer Atelier Brume, implementing a vision of sophistication and strength in an elegant, progressive garment. Distressed fabrics and exaggerated silhouettes for a bleak take on urbanwear. DNM Pieces, Le Laboratoire, a collection of sophisticated basics inspired by contemporary architecture.

Female models walked for EON Paris, designed by Lisa Cameron, a previous assistant to Alexander Wang, Jean Paul Gaultier, Martin Margiela and Gaspard Yurkievich - a promising Parisian, creative, ready-to-wear brand, which offers a high quality collection with minimalist and geometrical lines - and Chloé Trujillo (wife of METALLICA Bassist Robert Trujillo), an energy loaded scarves collection for body and soul! The high-quality silk scarves are a true art work and impressed with their poetic and colorful compositions.

The casting included fresh faces from high fashion modeling agency Photogenics Los Angeles. Custom runway music was composed by Sofia Hultquist - Founder of Drum & Lace - an audio development company that creates custom content and sound environments by uniting two of societies most creative forces- music and fashion. Runway makeup provided by award-winning Vlada Fomenko Haggerty. Her work was published internationally in Harper's Bazaar Ukraine, Like a Lion (Australia), Story (Ukraine), HOLE (Germany), WHERE (USA), Elegant Magazine, Elegant Ink, Fuse, Brink, Dark Beauty Magazine, Kaiouti Mag, Today's Bride and Jute Magazine.

The event also features a visual installation by special guest Guillaume Wolf: French creative icon, former Art Director at French Vogue, designer of the brand image of Parisian superstore Colette, and collaborator with luxury brands including Lucien Pellat-Finet and Isabel Marant. He is now living in Los Angeles and teaches at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In the event curated by LE FRENCHLAB he presented two new art videos created part of The Process Space initiative: Time Travel Primer (2015), a visual allegory about time, and You Live A Good Lie (2015), a collaboration with performance artist Kayla Tange.

A musical performance took place at 8pm. DJ Coco Disco and katXX kicked off the after party along with a digital photography display by Kristy Benjamin. A Los Angeles native involved in the fashion & entertainment industries since a young age, Kristy has put a strong focus in her work on Independent Designers. She was directly involved with LE FRENCHLAB since meeting Emmanuelle Rienda on a photoshoot in 2014. She promises to start French lessons soon. "LE FRENCHLAB is something I believe in being so much on the forefront of really bringing something new and fresh to the Los Angeles fashion scene, I am proud to be an American member of this outstanding French collective. "

Followed by performance by Franco-American singer-songwriter Naomi Greene, whom offered a powerful scenic presence with mesmerizing rawness and expressivity. Her alternative folk/rock songs show traces of interests in jazz, experimental sounds, and operatic fantasy. Whether on harp or electric guitar, her elegant simplicity catapults her remorseless yet compassionate lyrics straight to the heart of those who hear her.

Sinner Sinners a forceful punk-influenced rock n’ roll out of the controlled masses, closed the nigh with an energetic set. “Sinners Sinners arrived from France to California 4 years ago, but they have already become one of the loudest punk sensations of Los Angeles.” Rolling Stone Magazine

Notable attendees included ACNE, Racked LA, LA Weekly, Nylon, No3 Magazine, JustFab, Forever 21, French Consulate and more.

The 3 Instagram Filters That Celebrities Love for Selfies

Hi lovelies,

I recently read an article on one of my favorite fashion and beauty sites, Who What Wear. Appropriately titled, The 3 Instagram Filters That Celebrities Love for Selfies, the article featured the top filters on Instagram that celebrity use for selfies and which celebrities use them.

Of course, as an avid Instagrammer myself, I decided to try them out and share the results with you all.

My usual filter go-to to is Amaro, but perhaps it's time to spread my filter wings and try something new.

Below are the 3 filters featured in the article.

Let me know what you think! Which one is you fav?
