Sell it in a sentence: Lessons learned from the incomparable Lane Shefter Bishop

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

As I waited in my favorite Starbucks in West Hollywood with my notebook, pen, and iced vanilla sweet cream coffee in hand, I was trying my best to not let my inner fan-girl come out. After all, I was moments away from interviewing Lane Shefter Bishop, a multifaceted writer, producer, and director. She's also won an Emmy and six Telly Awards, all while also being at the helm of Vast Entertainment, the production behind blockbuster hits like D.U.F.F. and the groundbreaking Lifetime movie, The Choking Game, as its CEO.

If that wasn't enough, another reason why my inner fan-girl was on the verge of making a special guest appearance, was because Lane is also responsible for creating her own niche within the entertainment industry. She's a pioneer in the book-to-screen space, and not to play the gender card, but she's one smart, funny, and inspiring woman creating her own path in a landscape that is usually dominated by men.

As I looked up and Lane walked in, she cared a sense of integrity with her, she has the presence of someone that you want to impress, but with the humility to match. Being as accomplished as she is, she's also gracious enough to share her wisdom with the rest of us in her best-selling new book, Sell Your Story in a Single Sentence: Advice from the Front Lines of Hollywood.

Deemed as Hollywood’s go-to “book whisperer,” Lane shared with me essential lessons and insights to help demystify how some authors transition from pitching to published to production. The secret sauce lies in streamlining your log line - can you get them hooked in a sentence or less? If you're having trouble honing in on your log line, which Lane explains will ultimately be your most lucrative asset in your pursuit to getting your story on the silver screen, then definitely pick-up her book here, and if you need a more personalized approach, you can book some one-on-one time with Lane, here.

In the meantime, read below for how Lane advises to get your story off of the pages and into the theaters, with a simple sentence.

How to create a log line that sells in 50 words or less:

The most paramount ingredients in creating a compelling log line that sells is specificity and uniqueness.

What makes your story stand out against thousands more? Why should we care about what happens in your story above others? If you can hone into why we should care and pay attention in 50 words or less, then you've hit a goldmine.

If you're not sure how to get started, then use the blueprint below that Lane shared with me. In the most unique and specific way possible, answer the three questions below to create a log line that will break-through the noise and clutter of predictable pitches:

#1: Who is the protagonist?
This might be a deceptively simple question, but in Lane's own words, “numerous writers mistakenly put the antagonist as the protagonist of their log lines. I always tell content creators to ask themselves "Whose decisions are moving the story forwards?" and "Who has the most to lose if they fail in their journey?" That character is your protagonist.”

#2: What do they want?
What is the goal that the protagonist? What is he or she trying to achieve? What life or death thing are they fighting for? Make sure this is clearly defined so we know why their story matters.

#3: What's at stake if they don't achieve their goal?
Create a scenario where if his or her goal isn't realized, the consequences are meaningful and real. Make sure that we are invested in whether they win or lose. Make sure that the protagonist has to make a critical decision that matters.

Besides soaking up her delicious stories of how she started, lessons learned, awesome experiences, and how to create a killer log line, the most valuable piece of wisdom that I walked away with was when Lane simply said, "I don't believe in 'no.' I think it means find a different, and better, way."

Those words really struck a chord and I will cherish them forever. If you're like me and need more actionable insights from Lane, then be sure to pick her book, Sell Your Story in a Single Sentence: Advice from the Front Lines of Hollywood, and schedule some time for her to consult with you, here.

What I wore: "Dear White People" film screening

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

I'm on my way to a screening of the new feature film, Dear White People, and you know I love combining my two favorite things: fashion and film. Thus, I was almost as excited picking out my outfit than I was for the film, almost.

Dear White People is a funny, satirical film that looks at societal issues through the eyes of a handful of college students with Justin Simien as the writer, director, and producer. Lucky for me Justin will be in attendance and will be giving an introduction to the film. Be sure to grab your tickets (the movie hits theaters on October 17th) and check out the film, watch the teasers and trailers below along with how you can shop my outfit from tonight's screening.

Etheria Film Festival Celebrates Women Directors

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Enjoy my latest article that was featured in Fashion Edits.

On July 12th, 2014 the Etheria Film Festival celebrated seven female directors in the horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres with a screening of their short films with a red carpet ceremony and reception at the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. Fashion Edits was on the scene to capture the fashion and wardrobe trends from each film and to walk the red carpet in style.

Dawn directed by Rose McGowan
Rose McGowan directed this short film about a young girl, Dawn, who meets high school drop out Charlie and her life is never the same. Set in the 1950's, Dawn wears spring dresses with slips and floral patterns. You can rock the look today by sporting a long floral skirt with a white cropped top.

Wakening directed by Danis Goulet
A lone woman searches the urban war zone for an ancient creature to help fight against the occupiers. Taking place in the future and on dangerous terrain, the leading lady looks fierce in a fitted army jacket, black skinny jeans, and combat boots. To make the look your own, skip the combat boots and pair the army jacket and jeans with a pair of your favorite heels for a more feminine look.

The Jelly Wrestler directed by Rebecca Thomson
Filmed in Australia, the leading ladies wear 80's work out clothes while they sweat and prepare for a big jelly wrestling competition at their local bar where they work. The 80's trend is back in a big way, wear leg warmers and shorts, neon and pop colors, one-shoulder tops, and hi-top sneakers.

Job Interview directed by Julia Walter
Set in Germany, Lisa applies for a job only to meet her match in her interviewer. Both women look professionally chic in blazers, button-ups, and skirts. For your next meeting or job interview, take a cue from the film and opt for less is more with neutral colors, navy blue, and nudes with tailored tops, suit jackets, and pencil skirts.

You Me & Her directed by Sarah Doyle
Winner of the “Audience Choice Award,” this film examines what happens when Anna meets 30 different versions of herself from parallel universes and it's time to make a change. The film uses fashion to elevate the story line - “Cautious Anna” wears rugged skinny jeans, flats, and a monotone top; “Streetwise Anna” wears denim cutoffs with a black top, and “Sassy Anna” wears a blue hipster dress with polka dots.

Dia de los Muetros directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero
This film is all about girl power – on the night of 'Dia de los Muertos' the women of a strip club exact revenge on the men who hurt them. Take a page from this film's wardrobe of sexy and sultry lingerie (which were empowering and not demeaning) for a special night with your special someone.

Hide and Seek directed by Kayoko Asakura
A young student seeks Koto lessons at the home of a troubled woman. She wears the school-girl look with a pleaded skirt, uniform navy blue top with white stripes and red scarf. As older as we may get, wearing the little school look never goes out of style but opt to wear this look on Halloween and at theme parties.

Etheria Film Festival also honored female director Lexi Alexander and was the home of the North American premiere of the drama, horror, and Gothic romance feature film, Soulmate directed by Axelle Carolyn.

Atlanta: Hollywood's New Frontier, Part 1: Casting Directors

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Now that I'm splitting my time between New York and Atlanta, it's time to start building relationships with the people that have the power to bring me into the room so I can book the job. You guessed it, the almighty casting director.

At first I was worried about breaking into the market down here and making connections. The thought of “starting over” down here while maintaining my friendships, relationships, and connections back in New York was a bit overwhelming. After taking a deep breath and reciting my mantras Deepak-style, I quickly remembered the core basics of building relationships and instead of feeling overwhelmed, I felt inspired and excited for my big new adventure in “The New Hollywood.”

Of course, I wanted to share with you all my core basics of building relationships with casting directors and my list of the top casting directors to connect with in ATL.

Connecting with casting directors:

  • Be authentic: Show the casting directors who you truly are rather than try to fit into some manufactured mold or type. Once they know the real you, they can see which roles and projects that you would be right for and bring you in to audition.
  • Have a quality product: By product, I mean YOU! Make sure that you are taking acting classes and honing your craft so when you get called into audition for them you are prepared. Remember: it's not about booking that job, it's about creating a relationship with the casting director so they can bring you in for multiple roles.
  • Present yourself in a professional way: Even though you want to connect on a human-to-human level remember it's still a business. Have professionally done head shots, an accurate, up-to-date resume, and a reel or links to your work to share with casting.
  • Reach out consistently but don't stalk: Be sure to mail-in them your head shot, resume, and reel and keep them updated on your recent bookings and news through postcards. Email when applicable and appropriate but be professional and courteous.

BONUS: SAG-AFTRA CAP sessions have just kicked-off in Atlanta. If you are in the union you can sign-up for free sessions with casting directors that includes a Q&A and you get to do a scene and perform for the casting directors. I'm lucky enough to have gotten in with Alpha Tyler, (casting director for BET) and Shay Bentley Griffin (who has cast over 100 films and TV shows).

Check out these TOP casting directors that cast Atlanta and the Southeast's top projects:
