New York Fashion Week: Trends and Designers Fashion Recap

By Candy Washington
New York, NY (February 2012) - The flurry of New York fashion week has come and gone, but one thing that is here to stay are the coveted trends that are left behind. I’m still in recovery mode from running from runway shows, to fashion presentations, to trade show events, but worry not my fashion friends, I’ve stocked up on my Starbucks and I am here to give you the not-to-be-missed trends from the Mercedes-Benz Fall 2012 Fashion Week and which designers did them best.

Trend 1: White hot.
Winter whites has never been so on fire. From long white winter coats to hats, gloves, and more, set the scene ablaze with winter white.

Designer: Proenza Schouler

Trend 2: That 70′s Show.
70′s inspired prints where everywhere from the whimsical hippie girl at Ainsley NY to the vintage babe at Rachel Roy Collection. This trend is groovy, man.

Designer: Rachel Roy Collection

Trend 3: Fierce in fur.
Don’t call P.E.T.A., but fur, real or faux, was all over the runway. Models donned fur vests, skirts, and even fur ballet flats.

Designer: Jason Wu

Trend 4: Skirting the issue.
All you have to do is walk around my ‘hood, the über-trendy Williamsburg, to know that long sheer skirts with an attached mini underneath is the current look of the tragically hip. So not surprisingly many designers included the leggy look in their collections.

Designer: 10 Crosby Derek Lam

Trend 5: Luck be a lady tonight.
Prime and proper maybe so passé, but luck be a lady. The ladylike look and silhouette is back in a big way and is the perfect statement outfit for Valentine’s Day.

Designer: McQ Alexander McQueen

Trend 6: One hit wonder.
Move over color-blocking, the hottest trend was monotone looks. Complete looks from head-to-toe of all black, muted pink, beige, and warm greens and blues may have been one note but they hit the right fashion chord.

Designer: Calvin Klein

Trend 7: Psychedelic babe.
Mixed fabrications, crazy patterns, pops of colors, and lots of layers goes a long way this upcoming fashion season. Be sure to be bold and daring and they’ll be calling you Lucy in the sky with diamonds in no time.

Designer: Anna Sui

Trend 8: Pretty prep.
As an homage to my preppy Georgetown days, I feel in love with the classic prepster trend that took center stage this fashion season. Pair vests, tweed blazers, argyle prints, and trousers to achieve this hot professor look.

Designer: Ralph Lauren

Trend 9: Cinderella story.
Whether you’re looking for a wedding dress, a gown for the CFDA’s, a dress for the Oscar’s, or you just want to feel like a princess for the day, white gold, silver metallics, and eggshell are the colors of choice matched with silk, tulle, and chiffon.

Designer: Marchesa

Trend 10: Blog on.
The power of the personal style blogger has risen to epic proportions. My not-so-secret obsession, Polyvore, partnered with Covergirl to present a live fashion show during fashion week featuring some of the top personal style bloggers as the models. Can’t lie, one of my favorite aspects of the night was the awesome DJ spinning tunes in-between shows and the champagne toast at the end. The designers included Sergio Guadarrama, Lauren Bagliore, Vengsarkar Budhu, and Dana-Maxx Pomerantz. Did I mention that Dana-Maxx is actual one of our very first featured designers? Check out her profile on our featured designers page.
