#okthen: Why live-tweeting my first date was the most epic idea ever.

Candy Washington2 Comments

Hi lovelies,

Ugh. I have that dreaded pit in my stomach, churning and gnawing away like there's no tomorrow. It's been there ever since I decided to download Bumble, the dating app that promises to put the power in the woman's hand since she has to be the one to initiate the conversation first with her matches. I actually heard about the app last summer while on a quasi-date with a potential suitor. We never even made it to first base but we've become pretty good friends since then.

Since I'm officially back on the market and it's time to “put myself out there” here goes nothing as I watch the little grey ball turn while the yellow-colored app finishes downloading. Sigh, the dating games we play in 2016.

So I'm on my couch in my pajamas, all curled up with some red berry tea and I start swiping. Honestly, it's mostly to the left, past the guy in a group shot (because his friends are always hotter than him), the shirtless guy (because he's trying way too hard), the guy holding a baby (even though he makes it point to let us it's his niece and not his baby in his bio), the goofy guy, the selfie guy, and the list goes on...

After a few swipe rights and matches, I start up a convo with Bryan*, a tall fellow, 32, works in online sports marketing, has one brother, loves the outdoors, and has two arms full of tattoos. I'm not really into tattoos, but hey, it's time to “date outside the box.” After exchanging a few texts in the app, since I usually come across as pretty bitchy because I hate small talk and I rarely laugh at the cheesy “break the ice” jokes, we decide to meet for a drink the following weekend.

And now the warning signs ensue...

Warning sign #1: He texted me straight-away after getting my number, which normally would have been fine, but he followed it up a bee emoji. As in, a bee for Bumble, and then proceeded to press me about what I was doing that day and if he “had to wait” to see me until next week. My response? Yes, he did, and to have a great weekend and we'd talk next week.

Warning sign #2: He texted me the very next day, “How's your weekend going?” It was going great, so I was too busy to text him back. Plus, it was pretty clear we were hanging out the following weekend.

Warning sign #3: Two days later he texted, “Ok then.” Which was a pretty aggressive text being that we had never actually met and we made plans for the following week.

Warning sign #4: Everyone told me not to go.

Needless to say, I didn't respond to that “ok then” text and we didn't go for drinks that upcoming Friday. The next day I'm at my friend Caroline's BBQ and he texts me if I'm up for grabbing a drink that night. Of course I tell everyone at the BBQ about him and his weird behavior and we pass around his photo on my phone for everyone's opinion. The group made an unanimous decision that I should not go to drinks with this kid, but I hadn't been on a date in awhile and I wanted to make the effort to be more proactive, plus, we were getting drinks in my 'hood, so worse case scenario, I grab a cocktail, call it a night, and scoot my little butt home.

But since the group was now invested in the story and honestly, was a bit concerned about my well-being since Bryan was already a stage 5 clinger, I promised to live-tweet my date with the group using #okthen, so we could all follow along during the insanity that would ensue.

Bryan and I started the night out at one of my usual West Hollywood haunts. So far, so good. I tweeted that he was 2 minutes late, which is a major pet peeve of mine. I got a hard cider and he got an old-fashioned, he then proceeded to grill me about why we didn't get drinks the other night and that he felt “blown off” which led to these tweets:

Bryan then proceeded to pressure me to drink more, since by this time he had somehow managed to simultaneously talk the whole time about his mom, his brother, his job, injuring his arm, injuring his rib, how he got his tattoos, how his mother got a tattoo, and in his words, “very close to her vagina,” how he's happy that I actually look like my photos, and so on, while downing two more drinks before I was halfway done with my hard cider, which led to these tweets:

I never finished my hard cider since Bryan was determined for me to try their old-fashioned. So here I was, slowly sipping on my too strong old-fashioned and dancing in my seat to the early 90s hip-hop and pop music, while Bryan continued to talk, mostly to his self, about any and every thing. He then started to complain about the music, which I felt was the highlight of the evening, and that he was craving steak and wanted to go out for a steak and “feed me.” I nodded awkwardly, sort side-to-side, not really a yes or a no, which led to these tweets:

At this point, I quickly assessed that I was all out of frozen pizza at home, so steak actually sounded nice but Bryan was slurring at this point and getting a little too touchy feely, but alas, I found myself in the back of an Uber and on my way to Dan Tana's for steak, spaghetti bolognese, and a glass of cabernet. While at the dinner table, Bryan is now full on talking in baby talk, falling asleep, trying to kiss me while I literally have chunks of steak in my mouth, and keeps repeating, “Fine, blow me off, you used to be nice to me.” Check, please.

True to form, Bryan was slurring and being just as creepy in the Uber home. I made sure that my place was the first stop so I could get out there as soon as possible and he was so wasted I doubt he remembers where I got dropped off at. He then proceeded to send me incoherent texts all night that I just had to take screen-grabs of them and share with the group via a private group text so we could all weigh-in on the bizarreness that was Bumble Bryan, which led to these tweets:

Moral of the story? Trust your gut, and your friends, and if something or someone doesn't feel right, then don't do it and don't meet them. And don't forget to live-tweet so your friends can track you in case anything sketchy goes down.

Sigh, I've since deleted Bumble, so back to the dating drawing board the old-fashioned way, but it did make for a great and very comical story.

Summer Style with Banana Republic at the Connector L.A.'s Summer Soirée

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Just because it's finally summer time that doesn't mean that it's all work and no play. But luckily for me, as a fashion and lifestyle blogger and social media influencer, I usually get to play at work. However, that means creating outfits that reflect both my personal style and professional demeanor. So when I was invited to attend The Connector L.A.'s Summer Soirée for Influencers at The Penthouse on Sunset Blvd., I turned to Banana Republic for the ultimate summer style outfit the would be both fashion-forward yet timeless and chic.

The event was hosted by Diana Madison, Elaine Daneshrad of Fashionlane, and Caroline Baudino, nd during the soirée we enjoyed a light and lovely sustainable lunch by Kore Kitchen while previewing the works and designs of Isabella Huffington, Making Art and Breaking Hearts, Tara Hirshberg, Retrospecs, Art Department, J/Hadley, George Esquivel, Paolita Beach, and Karma el Khalil.

Since I was among such a fashionable and influential group, I needed to make sure that I was Insta-ready at all times, thus I choose a head-to-toe outfit all styled in Banana Republic pieces that were perfectly on-trend for summer style with a touch of professional polish.

Summer Trends:

Heavy Metals:
Since metallics is such a huge trend this summer and will be sure to continue into the fall. I choose a pair of strappy silver metallic high-heeled sandals for my look. The Bev Cutout Heel gave me just enough lift to elongate my legs but was comfortable enough to be on my feet all day going from event to event and meeting to meeting.

Make a Statement:
I always love a good statement piece. Whether it's a pop of color with a bold clutch or a sequined jacket over a little black dress, the statement piece is by far my most favorite piece to shop for and wear. I'm officially obsessed with feathered and jeweled statement necklace that I can mix-and-match with dressier outfits or play it cool and casual with jeans and a vintage tee. My new Feathered Fringe Necklace is my new everyday statement piece.

Be Flirty in Florals:
othing makes me feel more girly than wearing florals and I love it. The Long-Sleeved Floral Print Dress features a more sophisticated take on florals that perfect for my love of the pattern while being professionally appropriate for events, meetings, and even grabbing happy hour with my besties.

*Although this is a sponsored post by Banana Republic, all opinions expressed are my own.

Why Whee Up is the Next Big Thing in Fashion

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

In the fast and sometimes fickle world of fashion, I'm always on the hunt for the next big thing. The next “It” designer, break through fashion line, cool indie label, and must-have bag. A label that has caught my attention recently is South Korea-based fashion label Whee Up by Whee Lin (or just Whee to satisfy my fashion sweet tooth).

Launching in 2014, the innovative fashion line has already graced the runways of the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week in Malaysia, Indie Brand Fair in Seoul, Korea, Daegu Fashion Fair, and was a featured designer in the ENK's TMRW Fashion Trade Show in New York City.

Offering more than just a catchy name, the new fashion label has the potential to take the fashion world by storm. It appeals to our need to be trendy with its hipster-esque oversized grey jersey dresses, comfy sweaters, and cool kid tees, all sporting cartoonish drawings while also offering staple pieces with its flowy black maxi dresses, pastel pea coats, and two-piece pant suits. Regardless of the occasion, I love that Whee Up let's you both dress up or dress down in style.

Another reason why Whee Up's designs stands out from the rest of the fashion noise is that they have a very unique and individualistic feel to them. Each piece looks as though it were made specifically for you. The craftsmanship behind the tailoring of Whee's piece is impressive and gives the illusion of being sewn for a particular person rather than your standard small, medium, and large cookie-cutter silhouettes, cuts, and sizes designed for the masses. This type of attention to detail is what separates the fashion geniuses from the Average Joes.

Just in time for musical festival season and summer, Whee Up also appeals to the whimsical, free-spirited, hippie chic girl. The line features an array of summery frocks perfect for Festival Season. Pair the light blue and pale pink dresses with an oversized chocolate brown hat along with dark brown chukkas for a tragically cool look. The black-and-white striped dress is also ideal for the music festival circuit. Wear a straw hat and kitten heels to emphasis the stripes. For a more angelic look, opt for the all-white look and dress it up with colorful accessories like a bright colored clutch, statement necklace, and embellished sandals. The salmon and green tribal print summer dress is the break out look for summer style. With this look wear minimal make-up with an all-natural look to emphasis the unique pattern of the dress.

For the more adventurous fashionista, Whee Up has pieces geared toward the more avant-garde. Some of its most notable pieces features matte leather, shiny metallics, chunky wool, and a classic throwback to the '80s with a fresh take on parachute pants. Whee Up also takes an old trend of color-blocking, and turns it on its head by color blocking with grey, black, and white rather than the usual bright primary color scheme.

Whee Up is definitely a fashion house to watch with definitive staying power. This brand is sure to be setting the trends for a long time to come.

30 Days with Kura Nutrition: 3 Lessons Learned

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

It's been a month since I started my personal journey with Kura Nutrition and I couldn't feel more happy, healthy, and whole. During my time of personal reflection, upping my gym game, and nourishing my body with fresh fruits, veggies, and Kura protein powder, I learned and rediscovered three crucial lessons to living a confident and fierce life from the inside out and I hope you all find value and inspiration in them as well.

Lesson #1: Decide. Commit. Repeat.

Once I decided to start my day from a place of power with Kura Nutrition and then incorporate the additional elements of working out, meditating, and keeping a journal, I then decided to commit to this routine.

It was through deciding to become a better version of myself, committing to my routine, and then repeating it on a daily basis, did I truly begin to see and feel an authentic transformation. It didn't happen over night, but day after day, I started to feel healthier and happier, but what really surprised me the most, is that it got easier and easier as the days went one. Week two was easier that week one, and so on.

Deciding to take care of myself empowered me, committing to it made it a habit, and repeating it gave me long-lasting results.

Lesson #2: Nobody's perfect.

Even with my plan in place and committed mind, there were days when I just didn't feel like working out or I wanted to cheat and eat some Taco Bell. What I learned was to not beat myself up for being human. We all have cravings, off days, and just want to Netflix and chill with a bowl of ice cream from time to time.

When I truly embraced the fact that nobody's perfect and there is no "perfect plan" I was able to enjoy my journey a lot more and just let go of trying to seek perfection. Instead, I started to seek fun by creating mini goals for myself and then I was able to celebrate my accomplishments one milestone at a time.

Lesson #3:  Don't forget to change it up.

One thing I really loved during the past month was discovering new recipes using Kura's Vanilla, Berry, and Chocolate protein powders. I would usually just add in some vanilla almond milk, whip it up, and call it a day, but I decided to stretch myself and create new recipes and incorporate fresh strawberries, peaches, and blackberries.

I also loved switching up my exercise routine. I love running and started running a new path that incorporated more hills and more residential streets. The change added an extra challenge for my body and the new scenery of the residential streets with trees, less people, and less traffic added a more serene and peaceful experience for my mind.

So when things get stagnant and you get a rut, just switch things up and try something new to get your groove back!

Let me know how your journey has been to getting happy, healthy, and whole!

In case you  missed it, don't forget to check out the video above for five ways to get happy, healthy, and whole in five days with Kura Nutrition at the core of how to be the best version of your self.

THE LATEST SPRING FASHION TRENDS:

Add Shimmer with Metallics:
"The spring style forecast is shining bright with glitzy metallics. Shoppers can add excitement to an understated outfit with   sparkly and embellished accessories, including vivid silver sunglasses, bold backpacks and dazzling purses."

Angry Birds Makes For A Feel Good Movie

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the Angry Birds movie premiere here in Los Angeles, CA. The experience went above and beyond of just screening the movie, as the star-studded red carpet included carnival games, real life birds and animals, and life-sized versions of Red, Chuck, and Bomb.

The movie was feel good all around and I was laughing from beginning to end along with the rest of the audience. What I loved most is that the message of the movie, that all emotions are okay and natural to have, even anger, as long as we are in control of them and use them for good, wasn't delivered in a cheesy way, but in a hilarious and relatable way.

I found myself immersed in the fun, vibrant, and cheerful world of the Angry Birds and even found moments of when I've acted like Red in my own life. I'm allowed to get angry when I have to repeat that I want a skinny, iced cappuccino, with double foam, and a shot of sugar-free hazelnut syrup, at Starbucks right? Kidding aside, what I truly loved about Red's character is that he never gave up and was tenacious during his journey to becoming a hero.

Another gem and key takeaway from the animated movie, is that we must first believe and have faith in ourselves. Even though the birds were flightless, they were still able "to fly" by any means necessary, i.e. a sling slot, in order to take back what's theirs. I also loved it when the Mighty Eagle made this point after his eccentric and whacky shenanigans.

My verdict? Angry Birds is a delight and is sure to make all members of the family laugh, feel good, and most of all, want to take flight. So head over to the theaters on May 20th to go see Angry Birds.

VITA LIBERATA Skin Finishing Master Class with Celebrity Makeup Artist Allan Avendano

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

One of the hottest events of the season was the VITA LIBERATA Skin Finishing Master Class with Celebrity Make-up Artist Allan Avendano held at the who's who hotspot, the Mondrian Hotel.

Beauty editors, on-fleek bloggers, savvy make-up artists, and social media influencers alike, gathered for a day of primping, pampering, champagne, and brunch poolside while being taught the coveted tanning and beauty secrets of make-up artist Allan Avendano, a celebrity make-up artist and the creator of the Sports Illustrated and Red Carpet Skin Finish.

Allan Avendano is the make-up genius responsible for the sultry and bikini-ready bodies in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue that featured it-girl models Gigi Hadid, Chrissy Teigen, and more.

We were also treated with an insider-only talk with Alyson Hogg, the lovely founder of VITA LIBERATA Luxury Skin.

One of the best beauty secrets that I learned was that even for a naturally tanned girl like me, using VITA LIBERATA can add a healthy glow and give the illusion of more defined abs and muscle tone, regardless of my natural skin tone.

My favorite goodies from my swag bag that have quickly become my beach and everyday beauty routine must-haves are the VITA LIBERATA 3-in-1 Self Tan Dry Oil SPF 50 and the Body Blur.
