Put on your game face: The 3 secrets to perseverance

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

As we ride the beautiful waves of what we call life, we encounter inevitable highs and lows. I've encountered my fair share of both and believe it or not, this photo of me mean-mugging with my "game face" inspired me to share with you the lessons that I've learned about how to persevere through the tough times. I want to make sure that you don't miss out on your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but only after we have weathered the storm.

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”
― Maya Angelou

3 Secrets to Perseverance

Secret #1: Ask for help and support when you need it
There are times when I feel like giving up. When my certainty about my career path and lifestyle wanes. I don't get the callback, I don't land the fashion campaign, I get a my gazillionth parking ticket, I get a pimple, I get homesick, or whatever it may be that just makes me have a bad day or feel overwhelmed about life. I'm human and it happens to all of us. But in these moments when my certainty is weak is when I lean on my family and friends for love, support, comfort, and help.

The key to preserving through the storms and the lows of life is knowing that you are not alone and that you don't have to always be strong or pretend that everything is ok. For me, I call my mom and my sisters and I gchat with my best friends on the East Coast, I confide in them what's bringing me down and they have this uncanny way of saying exactly what I need to hear to help to keep moving forward. Sometimes the easiest way to get through a tough time is just ask for a shoulder to lean on.

Secret #2: Put on your game face when the going gets tough
We can't predict nor can we control how things will go, but what we can control is how we react when negative situations arise. A few months ago my manager set-up a meeting with me and a potential new agent. I had spent the morning prepping for the meeting - head shot (check), resume (check), make-up done (check), outfit on (check), elevator pitch down (check).

Feeling pretty confident I walk outside my apartment to find that my car had been towed. For those of you that live in Los Angeles, you know how gangster the parking restrictions are here. My heart fell out my chest, my eyes started to tear up, my palms got sweaty, and I literally thought I was going to pass out.

I always leave early for my meetings, especially with LA traffic, but I was pushing it close with time. Did I Uber to my meeting and then figure out how to get my car? Did I cancel my meeting altogether and deal with my car situation? Did I get my car first? How much was this going to set me back?

I took a deep breath, pushed back the tears, and called the towing company. It was going to set me back 200 bones plus the $83 ticket, that alone was enough for a borderline nervous breakdown let alone the pressure of being late to my meeting or even worse canceling. Deciding that come hell or high water, I was going to not only make my meeting, but I was also going to crush it. I hopped in an Uber, picked-up my car, and jetted off to my meeting. I made just in the nick of time (thank you to the travel gods), wiped my sweaty hands on my jeans, did a quick make-up check, smiled to myself in the rearview mirror, and went in and rocked my meeting.

I ended up signing with that agent and I have been extremely happy with him ever since. The moral of the story is that you cannot let the set-backs that life can throw at you knock you off of your game. If I had rescheduled the meeting, would it have gone the same way? A lot of "the breaks" in this business are due to timing. What if I allowed my car being towed and having to fork over $300, to distract me during my meeting? Your reputation is paramount and being a basket case in important meetings will not serve you well. So you have to put on your game face no matter what is going on behind-the-scenes and keep moving forward.

Secret #3: Don't be afraid to change your course
One thing my older sister told me that has always stuck with me was, "There is more than one way to your dream." And I choose to believe that, especially in the entertainment, fashion, and creative industries. There are no rules or one singular path to your goals, dreams, and successes.

This belief allows me to be flexible in my career and life pursuits. I can embark on new passions and avenues for fulfillment without the pressure of trying to fit into a certain mold, so when things don't necessarily go as planned, it's easier to shake it off, course-correct, and keep it moving. Additionally, just because my path doesn't look like someone else's that doesn't mean that I'm not headed to exactly where I need to be. It just means that this is my journey and I get to decide which roads to take.

Moreover, instead of fearing change or worrying about "failure" I choose to embrace it. I know that "failing" in one project is just the way of life giving me information (the events) and wisdom (the lessons learned from the experience) to empower me to move in a new direction that will inevitably allow me to be a better version of myself than I would have been if you had stayed in the same place that I was.

This is the essence of growth and all growth is uncomfortable at first but when you look back at how far you have come, you have no choice but feel grateful for the beautiful journey. It can get hard to see the glimmer of light, of hope, of relief, at the end of the tunnel. But I promise you, that if you keep moving forward through inspired action, you will get there - and more importantly, you will get there stronger, wiser, and better for it.

The 5 Best Fashion Looks and Trends for Spring

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Even though we just wrapped Fashion Month with runway shows from New York, Paris, London, Milan, Hong Kong, and even Los Angeles, for the newest and hottest looks for Fall/Winter 2015, Spring is right around the corner and I've got you covered for the must-have items and trends for the new, warmer fashion season.

The 70's: This is currently the hottest decade to draw inspiration from in the fashion community. From belle bottom silhouettes, fringe, floppy hats, pretty print, and flowy dresses, all-things 70's are on-trend this season.

Ballerina's are the belle of the ball: Really pretty and delicate looks dominated the runways this season. From chiffon and tulle skirts and dresses to criss-cross tops baring a peek of a midriff to dance practice inspired bottoms. Looking feminine fierce in ballerina-esque pieces will make you the belle of the fashion belle this season.

Full circle: The days of rocking square bags are over. Opt for circular bags to be trendy this season. You can still pack your essentials into you bags, just maybe not your laptop or iPad.

Call of Duty: Military inspired looks are taking command this Spring and you can soldier on in this trend by wearing fatigue prints, deep greens, military jackets, and army one-pieces.

Denim Dream: Denim is back in a big way. We love chambray button-ups, denim jumpers, and all-denim looks that mix-and-match different rinses from dark-to-medium-to-light denim colorways.

Get Your Man Back: An exclusive interview with author Chase Stonebridge

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Luckily for us single gals Valentine's Day is far behind us. Although, I must admit, that even though I'm quasi-recently single, I had a wonderful time on V-Day this year. I went on a first date with a guy that works at the National Geographic, got Spanish tapas, sparkling sangria, and heard about crazy stories of adventures from filming in the wilderness. Then I met up with my favorite and most special Valentines of all, my friends.

However, it can be a time when we reflect on love lost and start cyber-stalking our exes. Thanks to Google, Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, Instagram, text messages, and more, our exes are truly never left in the past. Well, if your ex is worth getting back, then they don't necessarily need to stay in the past and you can easily win him back and have him in your arms before the next Valentine's Day rolls around.

If you want to know the simple secrets to getting your man back, then read below for my interview with Chase Stonebridge, dating coach and author of Get Your Man Back, a breakthrough three-step system to help women get their ex-boyfriends back - as long as they are worth it. Grab your copy here, comment below with any questions or tweet @CandyWashington.

Hi Chase, I'm so excited to chat with you and I'm sure my lady readers are as excited as I am, especially with Valentine's Day having just come and gone. Tell us, what was the inspiration behind your book, Get Your Man Back?
It got to the point where I had so much information from bartending and life in general, that I was basically forced make sense of it all and create something to help women. Otherwise, I would feel as though I was doing a disservice to the women that I came across by not sharing my knowledge with them.

I've been through the ups and the downs of relationships, and everything in-between. Through life experience and thorough research, I have discovered the triggers, the signs, the basic rules of dating and getting your man back.

After hearing so many women's stories,  I was able to create a system that would help women get their ex-boyfriends back, but only if he is worth it. The coolest part of about my final product, the book, is that women were not only gaining confidence but it was empowering them for future boyfriends, relationships, and the day-to-day basic interactions with men.

Do your guy friends feel as though you have broken your 'Bro Code'?
Personally, I'm not crossing anyone. I actually think the antithesis of that is being done.  Essentially what I am writing actually has NOTHING to do with the guy in the first place. Just his state of mind. This is ALL about the woman from the inside out. Guys don't talk to each other with the awareness of, "if she does this one specific thing, I'm gonna get back with her." It's not like that.

What was the most surprising thing you found out about both men and women while researching the book?
I think that in the beginning stages of research when I was separately interviewing recently broken up men and women, it really opened my eyes as to how eager the women were to keep the connection going with their exes. They needed a string to dangle from. Almost every single woman had to have some sort of tab on him, otherwise she thought that he would just forget about her.

This concept is something that I talk about in great detail in the book, the counterintuitive state of that moment, ending a relationship with a guy but still wanting to have a connection to him. I received over 200 testimonials from women thanking me JUST FOR that portion of the book. That realization of how important the time right after a break up is, really opened my eyes.

Let's get a bit personal, what is your craziest break-up story? And did you end up getting back together with her?
For me, one of the more outlandish stories I had was getting out of a two year relationship. Lilly (her name for the story) and I were best friends for a very long time before we started dating which usually is a pretty good rule of thumb that something is headed in the right direction.

However, as time passed, we started growing apart is I had to travel more for work. She began thinking that there was another woman involved because we were communicating less because I was in the road. Of course, there never was anyone else. That being said, the way I viewed her started to change over time and eventually I suggested that we take a break.

After three weeks of bickering, arguing, and two broken lamps, we finally decided to give each other some space. I don't want to give too much away, but the way that she handled herself after that drove me crazy in the best way possible and we ended up back together for a long period of time until we amicably decided to see other people. I talk about it in the book.

What can you reveal to my readers about how to get their ex back without giving too much away?
Without giving away the secrets or even going into the three-step system, one piece of advice for a recently heartbroken woman would be to realize YOU ARE SINGLE. Until you come to terms with this, at least for the time being, you will never be able to fully move on. Your insecurity will subconsciously hold you back until the moment when you can wake up and look in the mirror and say, "I'm single, I'm sexy, and I am a hell of a catch. Let's get this day started!" That's actually when you start getting him back...

Where can we go to buy your book and connect with you?
You can download your copy here. You also will get tips and secrets every week sent to your inbox.

Time to get after it: My current obsessions

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

It's Sunday, March 1st, and it's the start of a new month with Spring just around the corner. It's the mark of new growth, new opportunities, and endless possibilities. So now kiddies, it's time to get after it: go big or go home.

So of course I wanted to share with you my current obsessions that I am currently getting after in a big way!

  • Bingewatching Season 3 of House of Cards. Who doesn't love Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright? #PowerCouple.

  • Rain in LA. The one thing about the East Coast that I don't miss is all of the snow, sleet, and ice, but having it rain here in Los Angeles makes my new home feel more like back home.

  • Vanilla Bean Creme Frappuccinos at Starbucks. I randomly ordered it at my favorite Starbucks in West Hollywood and immediately fell in love with it after my first sip. It was creamy dream of delight and is now my go-to drink for days of blogging and writing at the coffeeshop.

  • Jamie Dornan - before he was cast as Mr. Grey. As you all know, I'm obsessed with murder mysteries and I love the BBC's "The Fall" with Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan. I just finished Season 2 and I can't wait for the next season to drop.

  • Crossroads. I love shopping for vintage and contemporary finds at one of my fav stores. You can get lightly used designer pieces at discounted prices. Fashion and style without breaking the bank.

Let me know what you're currently obsessed with and what you like of my obsessions below!

Candy Washington's spotlight feature in Popsugar's ShopSense by ShopStyle series

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

In case you missed my blogger spotlight in Popsugar's ShopSense by ShopStyle's series, you can check it out below. It was such a pleasure working with Amanda Risius on the piece and I hope you enjoy!

---

Meet blogger and actress Candy Washington. This talented lady keeps busy while balancing a blossoming career, writing about her true passion, and sharing helpful tips on her blog. Keep reading to learn a little bit more on Candy and why she started blogging.

What is your best blogging tip for new bloggers?
My best blogging tip for new bloggers is to blog about your passions and what truly excites you. I would also strongly suggest to schedule out your content, posts, and social media shares. Even though I view blogging as a business, I'm truly obsessed with fashion, style, and pop culture and making it all accessible to my readers and viewers, so I never feel like blogging is a chore, but it's something that I wake up wanting to do and I go to bed thinking about.

Scheduling and staying organized is also really important because the best way to build your fan base and audience is to deliver quality content on a consistent basis. I try to stay on top of current events in fashion, entertainment, and pop culture so I can make sure to be delivering content that is relevant and timely. I use Hootsuite to schedule out my Facebook and Twitter posts so everything is scheduled and ready to go so I can focus on creating quality content throughout the week.

If you weren't blogging and could do anything, what would you choose?
I would probably be a psychologist. I love talking to people and connecting with them on an authentic level. Trying to figure out what makes people tick and what drives them really intrigues me. Robin Williams's character in Good Will Hunting was so inspiring because he used his own personal journey to unlock the potential within Matt Damon's character. If I could do that, help others through my own story, then I would be fulfilled.

On a certain level, that's why I love blogging. I love adding value to the lives of others through storytelling, even if that story is how to be confident in your own skin by rocking skinny jeans, a floppy black hat, an oversize tee, and a statement necklace!

Who is your go-to brand/designer?
I really love anything Alexander Wang. His collection started with a sweatshirt and now it's one of the most coveted lines out there. I also like how he seems so humble — I would love to do happy hour with him and dress up in his clothes! He mixes downtown New York and Brooklyn hipster chic like no one else. His campaign with Zoë Kravitz was one of my favorites.

What is your best fashion advice?
Take risks and forget about trends. This may seem contradictory since I frequently report on trends, but I use trends as a guideline and then I make them my own. Colorblocking isn't for everyone, but you can add a pop of color with a bold shoe or a purse.

Also, don't be a slave to labels or feel bad if you don't have superexpensive pieces. Check out thrift shops, Target, swap clothes with friends, and raid your mom's closet for new fashion finds. One of my favorite things to do is mixthe high with the low to create a unique and signature style, regardless of the price tag.

When it comes to taking risks, I wore Moon Boots in eighth grade and got teased about them in the cafeteria! It was a fashion risk at the mere age of 13, and I haven't looked back since. Flash forward a few years and now people ask me for fashion advice all the time! So don't listen to any naysayers and continue to do what makes you happy and what feels right to you.

What is one thing you wish you knew before you started blogging?
I didn't know anything about blogging when I first started out. I was home over the holiday break and happened to stumble across a few fashion blogs and couldn't stop reading them. I decided to start my own blog and just started posting pictures, my thoughts, my wish lists, and what inspired me. So this type of naiveté allowed me to be free creatively and really use my blog as my personal outlet.

However, I wish I knew to view my blog as a business when I first started out. To think about metrics, advertising, marketing, cultivating an audience, and branding. Over the course of the next few years, through trial and error, and a lot of research, I was able to start to fully monetize my blog.

I would also note that just because you want to monetize your blog that doesn't mean that you have to lose your integrity or compromise your creativity. Stay true to who you are and what you want to represent, and that will attract a wider audience and retain your current readers. Partner with brands and products that are a natural fit with who you are as a blogger and be OK with saying no or turning down opportunities that aren't the best match. Also, remember transparency and honesty are key, and if you aren't being truthful then you will quickly lose any credibility  and relationships and your reputation are paramount in this business.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I'm a huge homebody. I love staying in, watching a good movie on Netflix or Scandal, cooking dinner, and having a glass of Merlot or hot chocolate. I also love going out to dinner with my boyfriend and then watching a True Detective marathon. My social life is pretty low-key.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Every year my mother and I go for a long drive and look at all of the houses with holiday lights and take photos. It's one of my favorite holiday traditions because the lights are so beautiful and I get quality one-on-one time with my mom, which can get difficult when you have a big family and everyone is home for the holidays. I also love cooking on Christmas Eve. We all gather in the kitchen and listen to music, catch up, snack on treats, and cook the Christmas feast.
