Torrei Hart, star of VH1's Atlanta Exes and Kevin Hart's ex, opens up about the show, films, memoirs, and more

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

I had the pleasure of catching up with Torrei Hart, entrepreneur, businesswoman, actor, author, and star of VH1's Atlanta's Exes. I already knew that she was funny in here own right, but she is also warm, open, and very inspiring.

Read on for what I learned during my time with Torrei and what's next for this starlet from films, books, to race car driving, and what she really thinks about Tameka Raymond.

Candy Washington: Hi Torrei, you always speak your mind on the show and you're pretty hilarious, so what was your motivation behind joining the cast of Atlanta Exes?

Torrei Hart: I actually really enjoy watching reality TV! It's great entertainment and can be a great platform if used in the right way and for positive reasons. Reality TV has started a lot of careers and I also knew and trusted the producers. I go to church with them.

CW: You seem to have really bonded with Christina, but things were pretty rocky between you and Tameka, how has your relationship with these women evolved?

TH: The show doesn't show all of the good times that we have together, only the most dramatic moments. We really do have a sisterhood and are in constant communication with each other, even after filming had wrapped. Tameka and I laugh together all the time, she's actually really funny. We are both strong, opinionated women so there's bound to be conflict, but are all real friends.

CW: What's been your most memorable moment from the show that you can reveal to us?

TH: I'm a dare devil, I've been bungee jumping and sky diving, so I suggested to the producers that we go race car driving. All of us ladies are super competitive and I was going so fast that I spun out and slid off the track and into the grass! It was a very exciting moment and I couldn't believe I was going that fast.

CW: So in addition to the show, you're also an entrepreneur and businesswoman, can you tell us about your new Skimpy Mixer, 'Cherry Limeade'?

What was the inspiration behind this career move? And I want to know, are you really driving that car that you received as a sponsorship gift?

TH: Haha, I don't personally drive the car, but my family members and manager will drive it! The opportunity with Skimpy fell into my lap. I knew that I wanted to work with a product. I love what Bethenny Frankel is doing with Skinny Girl and I wanted to be pro-women and be about empowerment.

Skimpy, which is a woman-owned company, was looking for someone and I was able to make my own flavor, Cherry Limeade. It was important to me to give women a healthy, low-calorie, and enjoyable drink. I've always loved cherry and lime, so making my flavor as Cherry Limeade just made sense.

CW: What advice do you have for other women who want to stand on their own and build their own businesses?

TH: Know what you want to do, have a plan, do your research, know your market and target audience, and be prepared to do the work. When going for your dreams and goals, there will be many sleepless nights. I went to bed at 4am and woke up at 6am to get my kids to school. Be prepared to work hard and be ready to put the work in if you want to get the rewards.

CW: As you're building your empire as an independent woman, you also find the time to act. Can you tell us about your upcoming film?

TH: Yes, I actually start filming a new movie with Katt Williams called “Yank” this week. I'm always in acting class, training, working on my craft, and auditioning, This was a goal of my mine since I was young. Through the show I've gotten more recognition and people see that I really am funny and that I can really do this, to the point where I'm now getting offers.

CW: You also have a new book in the pipeline, can you tell us about the book and what was the inspiration behind it?

TH: It's actually my memoir. I want to tell my story and lessons that I've learned throughout my life from my mistakes so that I can be an inspiration to other women who are going through similar situations. I want to inspire them to never give up and that they will get through it.

I had a woman contact me on Twitter because she was going to commit suicide. She was a mother of two and her husband had left her after she helped him build his career. I asked her for her number and called her. We talked and prayed together and when she got off the phone she wasn't going to kill herself anymore and was in a better place.

I want to inspire and motivate people not to give up on life, it will get better. Never give up.

CW: Anything else you want to share with my readers? Any parting words?

TH: Stay positive and happy in life no matter what. Never give up on your dreams and goals. Put the work in and you can achieve it.

You can catch Atlanta Exes on VH1 on Monday's at 9:30/8:30pm central and tweet @Torrei_Hart.

* Please note that I've summarized Torrei's responses based on our discussion and they are not direct quotes.

5 Lessons Learned from Variety's Top 10 Comics to Watch: Lena Waithe

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

lena_waithe.jpg

I had the pleasure of meeting Lena Waithe at the premiere of Bros Before Hos, a new pilot presentation that she co-produced. The writing, producing, and creative maven with an infectious smile has been busy. She was recently named one of Variety's Top 10 Comics to Watch, is developing a pilot for BET based on her YouTube series “Twenties,” and her new film, “Dear White People,” is hitting theaters later this fall.

Lena was gracious enough to share some of her experiences and lessons learned with us through a #JETLenaWaithe Twitter discussion hosted by JET Magazine. But in case you missed the enlightening discussion, below are the top five lessons learned from Lena Waithe.

Be sure to follow and tweet, @HillmanGrad, @CandyWashington, and @GetJETMag with any questions or comments. Please share this article if you found it helpful. Let's go get 'em!

5 Lessons Learned from Lena Waithe: Writer, Producer, and Creator

#5: Use quality content shared on a consistent basis to establish your brand.
When building your social media presence, create content that will catch fire and attract an audience. Once you start building your audience-base, establish your brand by producing quality content and good material on a consistent basis.

#4: Find your unique voice by writing every day and learn from the greats that have come before you.
If you want to write and create but are having trouble unearthing your unique voice, Lena says to keep writing. Write every day – a poem, a story, a to-do list. We learn by doing and if we keep writing we will discover our unique voice and it is also a good way to overcome writer's block. You just have to keep doing the work.

Another piece of advice is to turn to the greats that came before us for inspiration and wisdom. Lena has been inspired by Gina Prince-Bythewood, Susan Fales-Hill, Spike Lee, Debbie Allen, and Bill Cosby.

#3: Create your own opportunities by creating your own content. Don't wait for others to open the door for you.
Lena says, “Hollywood is a business of NO. So we have to keep fighting until they're forced to say yes.” Keep fighting and don't wait for a door open for you, create it. Create your own web series, pilot presentation, short film, or whatever. Then promote it, continue to create content, and push to get people to spread the word. Don't give up and work toward that 'yes.' We have to start thinking outside of the box to tell the stories that matter to us.

#2: Be a new and rebellious voice. Tell authentic stories and don't be afraid to create complex characters.
Once you find your unique voice, don't be scared to share it with the world. Don't conform to what you think the masses want, but tell authentic stories that people can't ignore, and that is the trick to attracting the masses. Some of Lena's new and rebellious voices to watch are Justin Simien, Issa Rae, and Ryan Coogler.

#1: Be great. This is the best piece of advice Lena has ever received.
The best of advice that Lena has ever received came from the great Gina Prince-Bythewood, which was to “be great.” Never settle for meritocracy because greatness cannot be ignored, hone your craft and let it shine.

This piece of advice reminds me of a quote from Jim Carrey that I use as one of my mantras, “Risk being seen in all of your glory.” Be great and risk being seen in all of your light.

Bonus tip: Leverage social media to launch your career
Lena says that social media is our direct line to our audience, so why not utilize it? She leveraged YouTube to launch her career to attract a mass following. Both writing and building your audience on social media takes commitment and time management. Decide to be a authentic creator, be specific about your goals, have a vision, and work toward that goal every day. #GoHard.

How I booked a pilot for MTV

Candy WashingtonComment

Hi lovelies,

Right before the holidays I was fortunate enough to book a pilot for a new TV show on MTV. I say fortunate as though I had no control over it, because I didn’t, but what I did have control over was creating the circumstances to book the role, making the most of my time on-set, and leveraging the booking post-filming. I wanted to share with you my tips and tricks to booking the role and beyond.

Tip #1: Cultivate key relationships

I had auditioned a few times for the casting director that was overseeing the casting for the MTV project. I would email her personally for roles and opportunities, but only when they were a perfect fit for me and not just for the sake of reaching out. I would also congratulate her on new projects to show that I was interested in her growth as well and not “just what’s in it for me.” For more tips on to cultivate more effectively, read one of my past articles here.

Tip #2: Be confident. Believe in yourself with unyielding faith.

While on the elevator to the audition, I was accompanied by one of the building’s handymen. He looked over at me reviewing my lines and said, “Headed to casting? Are you going to book the role?” Without even thinking or missing a beat, I smiled, looked him straight in the eye, and said, “Yes.” He was so taken aback that he just laughed and shook his head and said, “With that type of confidence. I believe you.”

One of the best pieces of advice that I’ve gotten on my journey is, “If you don’t buy it. Who will?” You can’t forget to do your inner work to get external results. Practice your mantras and affirmations, practice speaking positivity and success, be gentle and forgiving with yourself, and truly buy-in to the fact that your dreams aren’t out of reach, but by the mere fact that you are on your journey, you have already won. Say “yes” to you.

Tip #3: Never forget that preparation is paramount.

Prepare, prepare, prepare. I walked into the audition prepared. I knew who my character was, I knew what it was uniquely about myself that I was going to bring to the character that no one else could bring, and I knew that the outcome wasn’t up to me, but this was my time to play. I was prepared to play within the given circumstances of the audition.

I came prepared to set. Well-rested, positive attitude, off-book but open to direction and notes, and most importantly, I came prepared to learn. To learn from the director, the other actors, cast, and crew. I came prepared mentally, physically, and spiritually to receive the most out of the experience while giving back and adding value to it as well.

Tip #4: Don’t forget about marketing.

After I received the news that I booked the pilot, I sent out a newsletter to my friends, contacts, and industry folks to let them know about the booking and other career highlights. I also sent out personal postcards to my target group of casting directors and industry peers. There’s no shame in spreading the word about your accomplishments, just remember to do it authentically and to always offer a way to add value to their lives or give back somehow.

Tip #5: Say thanks.

Often we forget about one of the most important steps in the trajectory of our careers. Being grateful and saying thank you. I made sure to thank everyone, including my fellow actors, for the opportunity to work and share my gift and purpose with others.

So thank you for reading my article and if you found it of value, please share with your friends, comment below, and tweet @candywashington and let me know.
