Unreal Fur: Wear your own skin. Go Faux.

I’m all about the ethical treatment of animals, but don’t get me wrong, I would still rock an awesome chinchilla or minx (shh, don’t tell PETA) but vintage of course. However, when I want the hottest and most current styles in fashion and fur, my go-to is Unreal Fur. An awesome fashion line that launched on the scene in 2012 from Australia and made its UK debut during this year’s Autumn/Winter fashion season.

Based on their ethics but rooted in fashion, the Unreal designers have a diverse background and bring a unique twist on cruelty-free faux fur pieces. The quality is so spot on everyone will be wondering, real or fake?

According to Unreal Fur, what’s in this season is sashay and sway in the ‘Furry Floss’ boxy jacket and you can even pair it down and layer up with a ‘Vest’ style jacket. The ‘Orient’ jacket is perfect to make a statement while out on the town and for a festive party with the holiday season right around the corner.

My editor’s pick is the Wonderlust Coat. It’s so fabulous that everyone will be wondering what are you wearing underneath? And it’s so stylish that even Kim K. and the Olsen twins with be jealous.

You can find Unreal Fur either on their site, on ASOS, and on My Wardrobe.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week NYC Ahead of Tech Curve with Reel Code Media

This story first appeared in Truth is Cool here.

During the hustle and bustle that is the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City, I had the pleasure of being invited to speak with Isaac Daniel, CEO of Reel Code Media and official sponsor of Fashion Week. When the lovely PR media maven, Christina Daigneault of Orchard Strategies, escorted me to their lounge I was greeted by a boisterous Isaac and I knew I was in for a fashion meets tech treat.

The technology and inspiration behind the Reel Code Media app speaks for itself – see below:
“Designers in the biggest fashion event of the year are integrating REEL CODE MEDIA’s new interactive app in the official event program as a sure way to boost business and enhance the fashion experience for fans. After downloading the REEL CODE MEDIA app, users can scan a patterned square “patch” for full and immediate access to behind-the-scenes footage, fashion event locations across the city, and the chance to win a couture dress by designer Malan Breton. The “patch” works on clothing tags, brochures, programs, billboard ads, and even equipment.

This brand-new app allows marketing teams to integrate videos, turn ads into points of sale, embed games and competitions, build customer data, capitalize on media buzz, manage customer relationships, eliminate obsolete news and media, and create buzz with up-to-the-minute broadcasts and news. REEL CODE MEDIA is an interactive augmented reality app that allows users to access four channels of multimedia content. Utilizing a mobile device, users simply scan a REEL CODE image then interact with their touchscreens to access the embedded content in each corner, which could include a video, web store, product information, store location, coupon, and promotions.”

Sounds pretty groovy right? Other insights from Isaac included that the future of technology is all about mobility and instant access to multiple streams and forms of content – and fashion is the ideal medium to bring that content to life.

I asked Isaac, who is also a scientist with over 300 patents and is the creator of a GPS sneaker, true story, any advice he had for budding creative professionals, inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs – he smiled with a big toothy grin and said, “Believe. Believe in yourself and what you want to accomplish and don’t give up. After all we live in America, the land of opportunity and success begets success.”

So don’t stop believing and get your all access pass to Fashion Week with Reel Code Media app. Download the REEL CODE app from Google Play (for Android) and the App Store (for Apple).

Now that Labor Day has come and gone, we can officially pack away our pastels and whites and whip out the hottest trends for this fall. I have you covered on how to stay warm and look hot this Fall.

Trend # 1: Look lethal in leather
Every fashionista can up her fashion game by adding in some leather, whether it’s a chocolate brown leather vest or cute black leather mini. Want to look especially lethal in leather this season? Slip into leather pants or an all-leather dress for a killer look.

Trend #2: All about Gray with a hint of Cobalt
Move over pastels and pop colors, this season’s signature color is all about gray. Either add gray accessories to your outfits or opt for an all gray ensemble for a subdued monochromatic look. Bring on the blue in deep cobalt to be fierce this Fall.

Trend #3: Baggy is best
Stay warm as the temperature outside cools down by sporting oversized coats, chunky sweaters, long dresses, and tops. We saw a return to grunge thanks to YSL and the oversized look is here to stay for Fall.

Trend #4: Mad about Menswear
Stock up on blazers, tailored pantsuits, and loafers to fill your Fall wardrobe this season. Our favorite way to rock the menswear look is to add in customized cufflinks to a flowy blouse.

Amex OPEN's Mihae Mukaida from RockPaperRobot Tips on Success for Small Businesses

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mihae Mukaida, a Parsons grad with a background in design, documentary film, and advertising, and co-founder of RockPaperRobot, an engineering boutique specializing in the innovation and fabrication of high-end kinetic furniture and lighting, and got the insider’s scoop on how to successfully launch your own start-up.

Enjoy the tips below on how to take your small business to the next level and for more insights watch their interview on Amex OPEN Forum here.

Tip #1: It’s all about balance
One of Mihae’s favorite quotes is from Abe Lincoln, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Make sure to take the time to enjoy life and step away from the computer and shop while building your business. It’s in those moments of “sharpening your axe” that true inspiration hits.

Tip #2: Be resourceful
Don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed, sometimes it’s right next door. Mihae and Jessica Banks, the other co-founder of RPR, often turn to other entrepreneurs, techies, and designers that co-habit New Lab, the open space facility in Brooklyn Navy Yard that fosters innovation in design, prototyping, and new manufacturing, for ideas and collaborations on designs. They are also a part of the Plum Alley community, a destination site where women entrepreneurs and innovators are able to support each other through crowd-funding, commerce, and receive expert guidance.

Tech tip: Check out McMaster-Carr, an ultimate delivery service for tools, products, and supplies to create your next masterpiece.

Tip #3: “You can make more money, but you can’t make more time.”
Even though you might be struggling to get your business off the ground sometimes it’s better to suck it up and spend the dough upfront then waste precious time going the do-it-yourself route. Remember, time is money – in the long run, saving time and making the most of it will allow you to have a bigger return for your buck down the road.

Tip #4: Keep pushing your end game
Next up for Mihae and Jessica is to commercialize their products and add versatility to their kinetic furniture pieces for mass consumption. Decide to take your career in your own hands, exert your creative freedom, ask for help and be resourceful, and then share your products with the world.

Don’t forget, in the game of Rock – Paper – Robot, Robot always wins.

Fashion 'Love': Tennis Style of the US Open

What’s more eye-catching than watching the tennis players with the physiques of gazelles volleying the ball back-and-forth? Watching their sleek summer style while doing it.

The cutest part of the tennis outfit is hands down the tennis skirt. The classic all white is a go-to for a chic look that you can accessorize with colors and fabrics or rock the all white look that’s sure to knock out any competition.

For a less girly look but still looking fierce on the court opt for the one-piece tennis dress. Our favorite pick is by Nike in light salmon.

To stay cool under pressure like Serena and Venus Williams wear a stylish visor from Adidas and when you’re off of the court stay on top of your game in a Nike’s new Tech Pack collection, a line of upscale hoodies, sweats, and sportswear.

But don’t forget about Fila’s new Heritage line that is inspired by the 70s and 80s with stripes and gives a design nod to their vast archives in Italy with a chic twist with ombre color variations in blue.

Ready, set, game, and match with a head-to-toe look from Ralph Lauren. As an official sponsor of 2013 US Open, Ralph Lauren offers an array of outfits in a rainbow of colors including skirts, dresses, tops, shorts, hats, and of course, the must-have polo shirt.

My picks for what to rock:
