Candy Washington: How did you get your start as a fashion designer? 
Carrie Licciardi: I grew up with a family of seamstresses, and always was intrigued by making my own clothes.  In high school, I never wanted to have the same dress as someone else, so I always designed my own dresses and had them made.  Once I got into college I decided to pursue my passion and head to Los Angeles to attend FIDM.  I graduated from FIDM in 2005 with an Associates of Arts degree in Fashion Designs and began working in the industry in Los Angeles.  Like any true New Orleanian, New Orleans drew me home.  I was fortunate enough to start my own business in 2012 and really pursue my dream.

CW: What goes into making your collections? 
CL: First I like to see what is trending for that current season.  Fashion is like history, it repeats itself.  So, after seeing what is trending I pick a specific era that is relevant to what is trending and go from there.  I love to get inspired by vintage pieces and take the shilouettes and put my flare into them.  Whether that be with design details, fabric, or color blocking.  I know the piece is complete when it fts into Pret a Porter’s motto, Basic Needs. Material Perfection. 

CW: What inspires you and your brand?  
CL: I am constantly inspired by the beautiful city of New Orleans.  Whether it be the history, the culture, architecture, food, or music; New Orleans finds a new way to inspire me everyday.  I love taking that inspiration and putting a west coast twist to it, to incorporate my experience from Los Angeles.

CW: Who is the Pret a Porter girl?  
CL:  use 5 words to describe the Pret a Porter Girl, whom I call Porter.  Timeless, Independent, Femine, Effortless and Classic.

CW: Anything else you would like to share with us?  
CL: One of my favorite parts about being a designer is seeing the way other people style my designs.  I love being able to give people a medium to express themselves through their style.  Anyone can buy fashion, but style really shows your personality.
