So you’ve bought a fixer upper, and now you’ve got months of work ahead of you to turn the place into your dream home. Now you can see why buying a house of your own can be a lot harder than renting, especially if you decide to pick a home that needs a lot of tender loving care! But don’t worry, we’re here to help! Sure, a lot of effort goes into renovating and rejuvenating an old home that seems to be falling to pieces, but there are quite a few jobs you can do over the next few days to make the process easier. Here’s a small sample of them to get you started. 

Start with the Windows and Doors
The windows and doors of your fixer upper are the most important points to target first. Why? Because how else will you get into the home and air it out once you’re inside! So get them replaced and/or repainted as soon as you can. 

It’s easy to DIY a change here, but you can also rely on services such as Mr. Rogers Windows and Doors to go the whole hog for you. Once the new windows are in and the new front door is on and ready to be opened up to you, you’ll notice a whole new look on the house, even if you’ve done absolutely nothing else yet! 

Put Flooring in While the Home is Empty
Your fixer upper is pretty empty right now, so why not take the time to put new flooring down throughout? You won’t have any furniture or fixtures to move out of the way, and if you’re planning to strip the bathroom and kitchen entirely, rip them out and never look back! 

Once you’ve got new tiles, hardwood, and carpeting down, you’ll have peace of mind over the safety of your building. You can walk through it without picking up splinters or slipping/tripping over, and that goes a long way to making you feel good about your new choice of home. 

Tidy Up Any Lawns
Finally, make sure you take this time to sort out the exterior look of your home as well. It might be hard to get inside and decorate right now, but the front and back garden are right there for you to target. They might be overgrown or concreted over, and you’ve got plenty of time to rectify these landscaping mistakes! 

Take some time to trim down any and all plants, especially if you’re planning to rip them all out and put new ones in, and make sure the lawn is presentable as well. All you need for this is a mower and a pair of garden scissors, so it won’t take much to get this job done while you wait for the contractors.
